.. .Srt office t Ullm, Oregon, under the
Aet of Congress ol Marcb 3, 17.
DALLAS, OREGON, A Pal L 10. 1908.
Tie way to build up Dallas is to pat
ronize Dallas people.
An nwkward blunder, and one
greatly regretted by this office,
occurred in Tuesday's paper, wben
the name of It. L. Chapman wm
printed amongthe unsuecensful candi
dates for the office of City Council
man. Mr. Chapman was not a candi
date for the office, had repeatedly told
bis friends that he did not want it,
and bad refused to permit any nomi
nating petition to be circulated in bis
behalf. Notwithstanding these facts,
and the farther fact that his name
was not printed on the ballot, several
of his neighbors and friends voted for
him by writing bis name on their
ballots. When the votes were counted,
Mr. Chapman's name was placed on
the official tally sheets, together with
the number of votes he had received,
in accordance with the law which
provides that all votes, scattering or
otherwise, must be accounted for.
This tally sheet was copied by the
Observer, and inadvertently the
scattering vote was published, instead
of following the established custom of
printing the namos of the regular
candidates. The writer probably re
grets this mistake more than anyone
else, and this explanation Is made
voluntarily to correct any impression
that may have been gained that Mr.
Chapman was a candidate and was
defeated in the election.
An addition bolngbullttothoObser
ver building this week will nearly
double tho lloor space of tho mechan
ical department and will greatly
relieve the crowded condition of the
office. Already we have more machin
ery than we have room for, and Im
portant additions to the equipment of
the office are con tern plated for the com
ing summer. No other intorlor town
lo Oregon hasaunh acomplctelyequip
ped printing establishment as Dal
las, and a constantly increasing busi
ness makes It uooossary for us to stead
ily add new machinery ami type to
our already largo plant. Tho office
gives employmenttoBlx t oopln, and the
work turned out Is of tho same high
grade as that produced by the largest
city printing hoimes. Hundreds of
dollars of outsldo money am brought
to Dallas each month by Observer
printing, and by fur the greater por
tion of It Is spent right here among
our homo merchants and business
men.
The primary nominating election,
will be held one week from today.
The total registration has not been
footed up, but It is believed that it will
equal or exceed tho registration of two
years ago. Tho fact that tho voters
have registered for the primary elec
tion proves that they are Interested In
the selection of oflloers to manage the
affairs of the county and state for the
next two years and Indicated that a
heavy vote will be polled next Friday
A Dallas float In the Portland rose
parade would be a nice advertisement
of our live and growing town, but turn
worth of attractive printed mutter,
descriptive of l'olk county, for illstri
button In the Eustern sintcs, would
bring us much larger and Utter
returns.

FAVORS CAKE FOR SENATOR
Corvallis Newspaper Gives Numerous
Reasons Why He Should Be
Elected.
The Corvallis Gazette, a staunch
Republican newspaper, having given
the Senatorial situation careful study,
has decided to support Mr. Cake. It's
reasons are given as follows:
1st Should Mr. Cake receive the
Republican nomination, It will place
Mr. Chamberlain "between the devil
and the deep sea" without a platform
to stand on, be having voluntarily
assumed a non-partisan, bappy-go-lucky
gait, going the whole hog on
Statement No. 1 and telling his Dem
cratic brethren he recently loved so
well that be has become infatuated
"witlfmortof the Rooaeveit policies"
until after the June election after
which time the probationary state will
cease and be will again be permitted
to exercise bis conscience by votiog
for Democratic measures In the Senate,
if elected.
2nd. That as Mr. Cake has stood for,
and manfully defended Statement No.
1 for the past two years, there would be
uo just cause for Republicans to pre
fer a new convert from the Democratic
ranks on this question to the exelu-
.. - i I ;.t
sion or ail oiuer quesuous m
importance to the state and Nation
which will ccme up during the sena
torial term.
3rd. That in tbe light of past his
tory, with legislative noia-upt, oji-
rupt use of money to "innuence
senators and representatives, uieu
seekinK election to the legislature on
Senatorial years to see the fun ; special
trains running with all other cor
rupting influences in connection
therewith, thus bringiog shame and
disgrace on the fair name of our state,
our people will never again return to
the old system of election by the legis
lature.
4th. That a very largo majority of
the newspapers in the state are ilrst,
last, and all the time in favor of the
people electing a Senator.
Mb. That nearly every Urango in
the state has declared by resolution
thatthoy will not support candidates
for the legislature who are opposed to
election by the poople.
Oth. That It is a Republican meas
ure passed Dy a jiepuDiiuau legis
lature.
7th. Nearly every candidate that
has announced for the legislature has
subscribed to Statement No. 1, at least
in a modified form, and those who
failed had to coma back and take their
medicine.
8th. With 30,000 Republican major
ity behind Mr. Cake, would it lie
possible for Mr, Chamberiuin to jump
sideways Into the United States Monate
by using a little soft soap on weak
kneod Republicans? We think not.
In view of those facts as we see
them, wo muit say that to our minds,
tho safest surest best thing for Repub
licans to do Is to voto for Mr. Cake for
United States Senator. Corvallis

Electricity for Lighting
Is only expensive to people who are
wasteful and careless. To yon, who
are naturally careful, it does not
come high.
Tt I economical because It can be quickly turned off wnen not needed.
With fjas or kerosene there la the temptation to let light burn when
not needed to save bother of llsntir. snr! adjusting. I o some homes
the electric light bills amount to only one or two dollars per month.
You can probably get some kind ot'artificial light for less money
than electric light, but does it aave you anvthing when it limits op
portunities for work and recreation ruins your evesight smokes
your walls mars decorations and increases 'household work. You
could probably save a dollar tomorrow by going without your meals
but It wouldn't be economy. It is not so much what you aave, but
bow vou save that counts.
