Again let the Observer make plain
its posltioD on the direct primary law.
This paper opposed the adoption of
tbe measure; did what it could to
defeat it. and does not believe In it
now. It's editor roted against it, and
would do It again if be bad an oppor
tunity. Tbe Observer was fighting
the proposed law when some of tbe
same men who are now bowling so
loudly against it were working and
voting for It Now, that it is law, it
should be respected and enforced.
Belief or non-belief in the measure, or
any portion of it, should not, and can
not, be held as a test of any inau's
Republicanism. This paper believes
that a candidate's fitness for office is
of more importance than bis position
on Statement No. 1 or Statement No. 2.
And It believes that those candidates
for office, high or low, who are uow
straddling the question or flopping
from one side to tbe other, through
fear of defeat, are not fit to represent
the people and should be left at borne.
Tbe efforts of a few would-be bosses
and political pap-suckers to make It
appear that Republicans who furor
Statement No. 1 were not true Republi
cans, failed of accomplishment. As
Brother Frank Davey, who, by the
way, does not personally Indorse that
foature of the primary luw, remarks
In bis newspaper : "A very large and
m very respectable portion of the party
refuses to be 'elimlnutod.' " Repub
licans should remember that tlio pri
mary law in Oregon was pussod by
Republican votes, and they should
also remember thut those same would
be bosses and Ropublicans-for-what
there-ls-In-lt did notopen their heads
against any feature of tho measure
when It was being advocuted and voted
upon. Even if the Republican party
needed purging and purifying, which
It doesn't, the members of this little
gang are hardly lit persons to under
take the job. The political history of
Oregon for the lust thirty yours is all
against them.
