The way to build up Dallas ts to pat
ronizt Dallas people.
PLEASE COUNT US OIL
The Observer would like to suggest
that a mighty good way to keep Gov-'
ernor Chamberlain out of the 8e natp
would be for do Itepublicsn to vot
for him at the June election. By pur
suing this course, a Republican Hna-
tor would be assured and the desired
result could be accomplished, without
putting old corrupt and discredited
machlue politicians In charge of the
state again.
Commenting on the foregoing para-
fraph, the Oregonlan says: "Let us
ave Done of thoold corrupt, discred
ited politicians in charge of the state
again ; no man who ever bag stood up
for the principles and purposes of the
Republican party ' and fought its
battles. No more of Goer, or Hlrnon,
or Moody ; no more of Lord, or Wil
liams, or Fulton, or Fee. As a holpor,
of course, The Oiegonlan is not
needed.
"Again, the simplicity of the appeal
to Republicans or so-called Republi
cans not to voto for Chamberlain at
the June election, is touching. It is
so childlike and bland. What have
these same voters been doing these
many years? Are they expected to
forsake Chamberlain now?
"Brethren, you have turned down or
cast out of the Republican party every
body who has or has had any force or
character In pushing and sustaining
Its prlnolplescr purposes. Everyman
who has been earnest In his support
of the Republican party Is under the
ban as a machine man. You will gut
on famously, nodoubt. All happiness
to you i it win do easy going, since
Early needs no organization and no
elpers."
Dyspeptic, unreasonable, and vin
dictive Not seeking to discriminate
between friend or foe, but striking out
blindly and vengefully In every direc
tion! "You have disrupted the Repub
lican partyl" "You have cast out
every Republican of prominence and
Influence!" "You" have done this,
and "You" have done that! It would
be Interesting to know Just who the
Oregonlan means by "You." Surely,
that paper does not mean to Include
the OiiKEnvF.a, which has ulways
worked to the extont of its ability for
purty organization and the success or
Republican principles. No man can
point a finger at this paper and truth
fully aay that It has had any part In
bringing about existing political con
ditions In Oregon.
At no time has the Oiihkkveh said, or
thought of saying, that the Oregonlan
was "not neoded" as a helper In light
ing the Republican battles. We have
never said this, because It never was
true. Nor have we sought to read any
Republican out of the party. We
could not have done so, If we would,
and It Is curtain that we have had no
doBlro to do so. Then why drag In the
names of Mr. Goer or Mr. Moody, Mr.
Williams or Mr. Fee, or any other of
the prominent Republicans named?
The editor has novor votod for Mr.
Chamberlain for any olTleo, nor does
he Intend to In future. This paper has
never prlutod a line, (puid for, or
otherwise.) In favor of Mr. t'hitmber
Iain's candidacy for Governor, Attorney-General,
or any other olllue. Can
Mr. Soottsay as much?
TheOnsKRVEit was lighting the pri
mary law when nine out of ten news
papers In Oregon the On-gonlan
included were either working for its
enactment orsayln nothing against
It We fought the eutlre ineusure,
with Btalemout No. 1 and all other
frills and trimuiiug thereunto belong-
ln, rt t it a ......... . i i - ...
j iw ai'peiuiiniiig. o
opposed the measure because we
believed that it would lead to the Very
conditions that exist in Oregon today.
Therefore, It does not become auy
paper to try to plaoe the Ohkkkvkr
among those roaonIMe for present
conditions.
mis paper believes In organization
for the preservation of the party and
me carrymg out of p.iny policies, but
Itaoes not believe in "machine" poll
wca, in me oraiuary acceptation of
that term. There Is a vast difference
between decent, legitimate organlza
tlon and the1 banding together ofa few
scheming politicians who care noth
ing for party or party principle far
mer man tney can use them for
minsn ends. We are of the opinion
that had the Republican party la
Oregon been dominated a little lees
by these machine methods. It would
have been in a healthier condition
today.
lo whom do we refer, when we
speak of machine politicians? To the
gang of political pirates who pursued
their policy of rule or ruin in Oregon
for nearly thirty years, and who
Anally disgraced the state in the eyes
of the Nation. To a few bosses whose
odious methods not only made possi
ble, but hastened, the adoption of the
revolutionary Direct Primary. To
the gang that defeated Mr Scott in
bis honorable ambition to represent
his state in the highest lawmaking
body of the United States, and whose
leaders, not content with betraying!
him, shamelessly gloated because one
of their number gave to the public
certain private correspondence that.
by every law of decency and honor,
should have been held sacred. To the
same political bosses who are even
now attempting to repair their old,
discredited machine and again fasten
their grip on the fair state of Oregon.
Do we make our meaning plain?
The OregonlaD sneers because the
Obheoveb urges Republicans to sup
port their ticket in the coming elec
tion; because itappeals to Republicans
to oeaso voting for Democrats for the
Important state and county offices. If
a newspaper may not appeal to the
voters of its party to stand by the
party ticket, then, in heaven's name,
to whom may it appeal? To the
leaders of the gang that corrupted
Oregon politics for thirty years? No,
thank you! If Mr. Scott desires to
assume the role of a spectator and
stand Idly by while the old ganar
siezes control of the state again, that
Is bis affair. We agree with the Ore
gon ian that appeals to party loyalty
in the last few years bavo mostly been
In vain, but if an appeal for party
loyalty and decency and clean politics
will avail nothing, then this paper
has no other appeal to make.
Tho Observer hud nothing to do
with the enactment of the new primary
law, but now that It is a law, we shall
endeavor to respect and observe it.
And we still maintain that the way to
keep Mr. Chamberlain out of tho Sen
ate Is for no Republican to vote for
him. It will be a difficult matter to
make the average voter believe that it
Is necessary to have a machine to keep
him in line and make him vote his
ticket, and for this reason we believe
it will be possible to elect a Republi
can Hunator and still prevent a fow
discredited bosses from securing con
trol of the politics of the state ugain.
THE FATAL PROHECY.
BY DEAN COLLINS.
"Taft has no chanoe." says Colonel
Watterson : Bryan will be elected
because the country cannot stand
hard times." News dispatch.
We bad our plans all ready
For the Presidential frav :
(Bill Taft. old chap, should win the
scrap,
And bear the spoils away.)
But Colonel Watterson, be says
Bill doesn t stand a chance:
That William J. will lead some day

How cruel the gift of prophecy 1
Our shattered hopes lie low!
WTby did you tell us. Henrv?
Why did you let us know?
We had our armor buckled on,
impatient lor the nebt.
For Taft, old boy, with zealous joy,
10 scrap witn all our might;
But Colonel Watterson declares
That we're already out.
And William J. will bear away
The plum, without a doubt.
O, fair flowers blighted in the bud !
Must we our hopes forego?
Why did you tell us, Henry?
Why did you let us know?
Hard times, says he, have done the

So Bryan steers, the next four years,
Our Governmental craft.
Why fight at all, if big Bill Taft

We bow our heads in deep regret,
And wail in bitter woe:
"Why did you tell us, Henry?

The ColoDel sees ascendant
In our fair Nation s skies.
Shining afar, the brilliant etar
ur William Jennings rise.
How we'd have stood by Big Bill Taft,
Had Henry just keep still ;
We'd fought for hlra with all our vim,
And boosted with a will.
But now this fatal prophecy
Has shown it useless. Oh,
Why did you tell us, Henry?
Why did you let us know?
What Ails You?

Hon. B. F. Mulkey bus lllcd with the
Secretary of State his petition for nom

Mulkey served the people of Polk
county as County Clerk for one term,
and was re-elected by tho largest
majority ever given a political -candidate
In the county, winning out by
r.-oo votes, itn was then called to
serve the popl as State Senator, Bud
tit tho end of bis four-year term, was
re-elected by a handsome vote. It Is
hardly necessary to add that Mr. Mul

responsible for this show of confidence
on the part of his fellow citizens, and
that here In Polk county his name Is
a household word for Integrity, energy
and executive ability. As a nubile

well poised, unswerving, but just. He
li a man that cau neither be hurried

in Polk county will hope for his elec

here, will never regret having placed
