rruning awny the surplus wo'l will
do much to reduce disease nnd insect
tioulile l:i the vlnejnrd. Tlie pruu
ing should not lie done while the vines
arc frozen, i the plant is liable to be
injured by twisting and bonding the
vines. The late winter nnd earlj
spring pruning is usually done hasti
ly, and if done late In the spiing the
vines bleed freely. It Is better to
prune the vines late than not to prune
them any. but the best results will be
obtained by pruning In early winter.
The young vines should be pruned
very closely. The first year nfter the
vines uie set in the vineyard all the
fops should be cut a way, nnd not more
than three buds should be left at the
base of the vine. This will leave nnlv
a stub, but that Is all that Is necossar'v
to produce a good growth of vine the
next year.
The second year's growth may be
placed on n trellis, and the vines may
Iw permitted to bear a light crop the
third year. The general tendency Is to
let the vino bear very heavy cmps ns
soon as they will, nnd the vines are
weakened mid do not prove of much

duced from not more than ton or
twelve buds on each plant. From the
third year on the niiiiii.or f i.n.iu if.

the strong vines are left with thirty or
forty buds nfter the pruning has been
bine. This will lu like very severe
pruning, ami so It Is, but It produces
uie nesi nmi the most fruit.
These buds referred to iu tlie pieced
ing paragraph are on the last season's
growth of vines and will produce the
young shools In I lie spring, which enrrv
tho fruit. If tlie vineyard Is well culti
vnled nnd sprayed, each bud left on
