summoned to the bedside of her father,
J. R. Hubbard, who is critically ill.

Dr. J. H. Coleman, who has served

In publishing the list of those who
were successful ir the teachers exami
nations last week, the name of Miss
Ethel Kellogg, of Falls City, who
secured a second grade certificate' was
inadvertently omitted.
Manager Frank Kersey, of tfee
Dallas College basketball team,
reports that contracts have been signed
up with the famous aggregation from
Muscatine, Iowa, and that the game
w'itb that team will be played here on
March 5.
The Dixie Jubilee Singers, who
have filled two successful engage
ments in this city during the past two
seasons, have been secured to give an
entertainment under the auspices of
the Dallas Public School on Friday,
March 6.
The "Winged D" stick pins,
designed and engraved in silver by
Charles Lane, met with high favor
among the basketball "fans" of this
city, and he says that he already has
his hands full of almost more orders
for these pii fl than he can supply.
The local oratorical contest will be
held In the Dallas College next Fri
day, February 28, and the orator will
be chosen who is to represent that
Institution in the Intercollegiate Pro
hibition Oratorical Contest to be held
at Philomath during the coming
month.
Mrs. J. B. Nunn returned Wednes
day night from Portland, with her
daughter, Julia, who has been taking
medical treatment in the Portland
Sanitarium at Mt Tabor. Mrs. Nunn
speaks highly of the treatment received
at the sanitarium, and says that her
daughter's health ,is decidedly
improved.
MONMOUTH GIRLS ENTERTAIN

Misses Bessie Graham and
Rubie Fream.
A pleasant party was given by Miss
Bessie Graham and Ruble Fream at
the home of the latter In Monmouth,
Friday evening. The parlors, were
tastefully decorated with ivy, and the
porch was brilliant with Japanese
lanterns. One of the interesting
features was an artificial well, from
which punch was served by Miss
Graham.
After an hour of games and amuse
ments, supper was served by the
charmingyoung hostesses. The party
being a leap year occasion, the girls
escorted the young men to the dining
room, where a dainty luncheon had
been spread. The guests departed at
a late hour, after having spent a very
delightful evening.
Those present were; Misses Mildred
Force, Agnes Clark, Blanche Chute,
Hazel Work, Muriel Boyle, Doris
Herren, Allene Hosner, Ruth Nunn,
Tressa Churchman. Olive Pettlt.
Messrs. Rainie Burkhead, Chester
Strong, Wendell Crowley, Ray Chute,
Norman Crowley, Irvln Springer,
Glen Work, Harold Herren, Howard
Morlan and Douglas Crowley.

attended the recent meeting of the Ore
gon Pure Bred Live Stock Association
in the interest of the Angora breeders.
Through their efforts the association
recommended that In the goat "depart
ment classes be made for both junior
and senior kid bucks and kid does.
Rural Northwest.
A meeting of the stockholders in the
newly incorporated cannery company
will be held at the Court House at 2
o'clock Monday afternoon, and direc
tors for the company will be elected.
It is urged that all who hold stock in
the company be present or send repre
sentatives, as this meeting will be of
utmost importance.
The services held at the Christian
church by Evangelist J. P. Conder
are attracting large audienes each
night. Mr. Conder is a man of wide
experience and tnorougn education,
and his sermons are attractive for
their rhetorical and literary merit, as
well as for the deeper and more serious
appeal to the spiritual side of his
listeners' natures.
A large crowd from Dallas will
attend the daDce given at "Wagner's
Hall tonight by the Foresters' Lodge,
of Falls City. The free special train
that has been furnished by the lodge
will leave Dallas at 8 o'clock this
evening, and will start on the return
trip at 2 o'clock a. m. Music for this
occasion will be furnished by Stock
well's orchestra of seven pieces.

Emmett and Al Butler, the proprietors
of the gallon house In the north part
of Polk county, were brought before
Justice of the Peace Hardy Holman,
Wednesday morning, on the charge of
maintaining a publlo nuisance. Their
trial was set for next Tuesday at 1
o'clock, and the four men were released
upon promise to appear at that time
for their hearing.
The Bijou Stock Company played a
successful two-night engagement in
this city this week, closing last night,
with a fine presentation of the drama,
"The Squire's Daughter," before a
large and appreciative audience. The
comedy, "In Washington, D. C,"
played Wednesday night, was well
patronized, and proved to be fully up
to the standard of excellence predicted
in the advance notices.
