A Hon Should Carry His
Squarely on His Feet.
We desire to call attention to one of
the common weaknesses found in all
breeds of hogs. We refer to the mat
ter pf poor feet. Some of the most in
excusable mistakes that we have ever
witnessed in a show ring have been
made by Judges who placed little em
phasis on the importance" of a hog
walking squarely on his feet, says
Iowa Homestead.
When a hog walks down on his dew
claws the trouble is generally due to
one of two causes or possibly both. A
long pastern is a faulty formation, and
a hog with this weakness will general
ly go down under heavy feeding in
deed, he need not be heavy and fat to
reveal the weakness to one who knows
how and where to look for it. A sharp
Judge ought to be able to detect it in a
class under six months just as quickly
as in an aged class where the animals
are showing very heavy weights. The
second cause of hogs going down, to
which we referred, is a weakness ei
ther in the tendons or in the bones.
It is sometimes possible to find a fair
ly cood formation in the length and
shape of the pastern, and nevertheless
the hog goes down. In such a case the
weakness must be due to failure of
the muscles to hold the foot properly
In shape, and In such a case the physi
ological weakness is In the muscles
and not In the bone.
"No Foot, No Hog."
We find on turning to the scale of
points of the various breeds that from
five to ten counts are given for good
feet and legs. While hi making up a
scale this Is possibly all that could be
allowed, it is strictly true, ns is often
Bald of horses, "no foot, no ho;
There is no 'weakness that seems to
propagate so easily as the long pastern
or the weak' tendons around the foot.
It Is Important in the gilt and in the
old sow, but it is doubly Important in
the case of the male. The Idea of us
ing on a herd of twenty or twenty-five
sows a male with weak feet Is tho
very acme of shortsightedness. Think
of having on the farm 100 or 130 weak
footed hogs, and yet this is just what
Is likely to occur If a poor footed male

A Life Work For a Man.
Breeding good dairy animals Is not
yet an exact science. It is an evolu
tionary work, in which the painstak
ing, patient, intelligent breeder is co
operating with nature for the produc
tion of the improved animals. And
nature will not bo hurried, so the work
of a breeder Is not the work of a few
tentative mating of animals, show
ing wonderful results in a few years.
It is more nearly a life work for a man
and one man's life so often so lamen
tably short for the length of the work.
The Merino sheep industry in Ver
mont is again entering an era of pros
nerity that presages a boom, according
to an exchange. While by no mean,
approaching the palmy days o thirty
years ago, the industry is reviving, and
each year for a decade past has shown
an Increase in shipments of fancj
strains of Merino breeding sheep to
Africa and Australia. Within ten
years past the bulk of the shipments
have been to the Transvaal, in South
Africa i-rd the leading Boer farmers
are today breeding Addison county
sheep almost exclusively.
Nebraska's Stretchy Hog.
We compliment the swine breeders
of Nebraska on the wisdom they are
showing in their breeding operations.
They have not been carried away by
pedigree fads, and today they are pro
ducing what one might call a profitable
farmer's hog. It is our honest convic
tion that no state in the corn belt
shows so many useful hogs as are seen
at the Nebraska state fair. They coin-
bine scale with a large degree of qual
ity. We concede that as you go east
there will be found rather more quali
ty, but the reduction in scale, in our
opinion, more than offsets this superior
quality. Men who are breeding hogs
and feeding them out for the meat
market are calling for stretchy hogs,
and the fine stock breeders of Nebras
ka are just wise enough to satisfy this
demand. No doubt the remarkable
scale that is found in Nebraska hogs Is
to some extent the result of the free
use of that splendid flesh forming food,
alfalfa. It makes bone and builds the
frame, says Iowa Homestead.
Intensive Farming.
Dr. E. C. Switzer, a veterinary sur
geon of Springfield, Mass.. has a four
teen acre farm within the city limits
on which he keeps thirty horses and
cattle blooded Guernseys and Ayr
shires. It Is needless to say that he
makes the land pioduce three times as
much as ordinary farm land, using tba
latest machinery and quickest meth
ods. In fact, ten acres support the
thirty head. Rye, sorghum, millet,
sugar cane and corn are raised, three
crops in a season. On a three acre
plat of rye thirty tons were cut. The
six acres of corn this year is estimated
to yield 200 tons. As much as possible
goes into silo; the rest is stacked. A
side industry is the preparation of fer
tilizer and "0110 lawn dressing, which
brings high prices. Country Geitle-mau.
