One of our exchanges remarks that
there is a law business down in
Astoria that is being sadly neglected.
Some of the owners of property on
the south side of Court street are hav

PREPARE FM PROGRAM
Polk County Teachers Will Hold
Meeting: in Independence, Satur
day, February 22.
It is now generally believed that the
District Attorneyship muddle will be
settled by the appointment of Hon
George H. Burnett to that important
and responsible ofUce, Hchucbel
(Senator Bourne's candidate) Is out of
the way, and there is no likelihood of
T. J. Cleeton (Senator Fulton's choice)
being appointed. It is said that Judge
Burnett is satisfactory to tho entire
Oregon delegation, and it seems
reasonably certain that his narno will
be presented for tho office and that
President Roosevelt will make the
appointmont. Judge Burnett la a
clean, able lawyer and a citizen of
sterling worth, and is admirably
qualified for the Important office of
Federal prosecutor. His appointment
would bo satisfactory to tho pooplo of
his district and to the entire sta'to of
Oregon.
Joseph E. Wing, one of the best
agricultural writers In tho world, In
an address atthoOrepon Agricultural
Collogo recently, said : "I am proud
of sovoral things that I can do: I enn
pack a tuule; Iran cut a tree so It will
fall where I want It to mostly. I can
hew a plank straight; lean striko a
drill all day without striking the other
fellow; lean rig a plow so you can
holdlt with tho thuinband first flngor;
lean walk live ratios an hour; and
Bomeother things I can do I am proud
of. I am prouder of the things I have
done than tho thlugs I have said. It
takes more brains to rig a plow right
than to do a problem in Algebra,
When you loarn a thing, you want to
do it, and the man who gets the jiiost
out of life uses his arm as well as his
brain." If Mr. Wing's philosophy Is
right, and It undoubtedly Is, then it Is
possible for the farmer to get more out
of life than any other class, for brains
and muscle are a necessary part of
the equipment of every good farm,
anu there Is abundant opportunity
thore for the employment of both.
The date of Saturday. February 22,
was set as the time for holding the
School Convention in the Airlie dis
trict, but owing to the recent high
water, which has made travel in that
locality difficult, it was decided to
postpone the meeting and hold the
Polk County School Teachers' Insti
tute in Independence at that time.
Teachers who failed to secure the
required 16 hours of attendance at
the Institute in November, will be
allowed to have their attendance at
the coming Institute credited.
The completed program, as pre
pared by Superintendent Seymour,
follows: Language and Composition
Superintendent It. F. Robinson, of
Multnomah county: Grammar and
Arithmetic, Professor L. R. Traver,
of the Monmouth Training Depart
ment; "How to Prepare for Teaching
Agriculture," Miss Loretta Smith, of
Monmouth: "Tho Appreciation of
Art," Mrs. E. M. Pennel, of Mon
mouth. Music for the occasion will
bo furnished by tho famous faculty
quartette of tho Monmouth Normal
School, and the program will be
Interspersed with numbers rendered
by the pupils of the Independence
public school.

ing that the abbreviation for February
Feb. means Freeze every body,
and that man looked frozen in his uls

the kind of warmth that stays, the
warmth that reaches from head to foot,
all over the body. We could have told
hltu fiom personal knowledge that
Hood's Sarsaparllla gives permanent
warmth. It lovlgorates the blood and
speeds it along through artery and j

and resist the attacks of disease. It
gives the right kind of warmth, stim
