Mr. and Mrs. Walter Nichols, of
M. O. Boyer, a former student of
Dallas College, now employed as
teacher in the public school at Butler,

H. L. Fenton announces that mohair
sacks may be secured free of charge

Mohair Association, from the Dallas
Mercantile Company.
Mrs. Porgis, State Commander of
the Lady Maccabees or Oregon, paid
an official visit to the Dallas lodge
last night. She will visit the Inde
pendence lodge tonight.
The Rev. N. W. Sager has been
holding revival services at Rickreall
every night since last Friday. The
meeting will be continued during the
remainder of this week and may be
extended through the week following.
H. B. Shope, of Winslow, Arizona,
arrived In Dallas, Friday, after an
absence of several years, and will j
visit among his friends and relatives
In this vicinity for a few weeks before
returning southward.
The lady members of the dancing
club will meet in the Observer office
at 7 :30 o'clock tomorrow (Wednesday)
evening to make arrangements for the
Leap Year Ball to be given in March.
A full attendance is desired.
W, D. Matthews, of Marion, arrived
in Dallas last night for a short visit
among his many friends in this city.
Mr. Matthews has located on a farm
h Marion county, and says that he is
well pleased with his new home.
Mr., and Mrs. A. S. Campbell, of
Dallas, visited their former friends in
this city the past week. They were
residents of this place and their
friends always give them a h'earty
welcome when they return to the city.
McMinnville Telephone-Register.
George Hare, the 7-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. Chester VC Hare, of Port
land, died at the family home, Sunday,
February 9. Mr. and Mis. Hare are
well known in Dallas, and their many
friends in thjs city will symathize
deeply with them in the loss of their
only child.
Many of the students coming from
the Monmouth Normal School desire
to secure rooms and board in Dallas
during the three days of teachers'
examinations, and Superintendent
Seymour desires all those who will be
able to furnish entertainment for the
visiting teachers to notify him at once,

W. F. Johnson has returned from
Oregon City, where he has been
employed during the past seven
montns, and will take a position as
engineer in the sawmill ot the Dallas
Lumber Company, which is soon to
resume operations.
The basketball team of Pullman,
Washington, one of the strongest
aggregations in that state, has written
to Manager Kersey to secure a date
for a contest with Dallas College, and
the game will be scheduled for the lat
ter part of the present month.
J. G. VanOrsdel attended the first
annual meeting of the officers of the
Oregon Merchants' Mutual Insurance
Company in Dayton, Saturday. He
says that although but a year old, the
company has had great success and
has made truly remarkable progress,
The Polk County Mohair Association
will meet in Dallas, Saturday after
noon at one o'clock, and organize the
mohair pool, and make preparations
for the sale of mohair. The meeting
will be one of great importance, and
it is urged that all members of the
Association endeavor to be present if
possible.
A dispatch from Washington in last
night's Telegram says that the pub
lished report that Senator Fulton
would bring suit against Francis J.
Heney for slander is without founda
tion. Senator Fulton is non-commit
tal regarding details of the course he
will pursue in answering Heney's
charges, but it is known that he has
no idea of bringing suit.
The "hot tamaie" supper given by
women of the Christian Church, Fri
day, was most successful. A large
crowd of people was served, and a
handsome sum was cleared. The
t am ales were excellent and those who
prepared them fully sustained the
reputation that has long been held by
the women of the Christian Church,
for arranging elaborate and appetiz
ing suppers.
E. Ralston, former publisher of the
West Side Enterprise, has sold his
business to Charles E. Hicks and
W. T. Fogle, who will take possession
immediately. Both are experienced
newspaper men. Mr. Hicks was form
erly employed on various , Eastern
Oregon papers, and Mr. Fogle is one
of the ex-proprietors of the Forest
Grove Times. They will move their
families to Independence, where they
will make their home in future.
B. A. Teats, coach of the Dallas
College basketball . team, refereed a
double-headed game of basketball in
McMinnville, Friday night, between
the first and second teams of McMinn
ville College, and the first and second
teams of Pacific College, of Newberg
The teams from Newberg were Under
the management and coaching of
Arthur K. Wilson, the crack forward
on the Dallas College team during
the first two years in which it won and
held the championship of Oregon.
Under his skillful direction the two
aggregations from Newberg were able
to defeat the speedy antagonists of
McMinnville College.
MILL WILL RESUME WORK
Dallas Lumber Company's Plant Will
Begin Operations This Week
After Long Idleness.
B. 0. Miles, manager of the Spauld
ing Lumber Company, was in Dallas
yesterday, and preparations are under
way for resuming work in the Dallas
sawmill during thi3 week.
The machinery will be put in readi
ness, and work will be commenced
witn a full crew of men tomorrow
(Wednesday) morning if possible.
A sufficient supply of logs is on
hand to run the mill for some time,
ana tne logging crews will resume
work in the camps on the Rickreall as
soon as possible. If no unforeseen
accident occurs to prevent, it is the
intention of the company to keep the
mill in steady operation from this
time on.
This sawmill has been inactive
for some time, and it is believed that
its re-opening will have an instant
and far reaching effect for the better
ment of labor conditions in this city
and the surrounding country.

Manager Fran k Kersey is endeavor
ing to arrange for a special train to
be run between Dallas and Corvallis
on Friday, February 21, when the big
game of basketball between Dallas
College and O. A. C. will be played.
He is desirous of securing as many
people as possible to accompany and
support the Dallas aggregation and
requests that all who intend to go will
please notify him as soon as possible,
as it will make it much easier for him
to secure the special if he can give
assurance that a large crowd will
make the trip.

closed tomorrow while the librarian Is

State Library Commission, is directing
and assisting in the work, and is
greatly pleased with the interest shown
in the library by the people of Dallas.
