Monday's Telegram The election of
a President or tne rortiaoa iornojer
clal Club will be held In due time. Mr.
Hod son may be induced to serve
another year.
Monday's Journal C. W. nodson
was elected President of the Portland
Commercial Club at 1 o'clock this
afternoon.
Two brief little paragraphs, but suf
flcient to show the contrast between the
news service of the two papers. I n the
same issue of the Telegram la which
Mr. Hadson's election was predicted,
(after be bad already been elected,) a
large space on the front page was
given to the production of a supposed-
to-be-funny cartoon in which thecoun
try editor was made the butt of the old
cordwood-on-subscriptloD gag, At the
very moment the sleepy old sheet was
attempting to poke fun at newspapers
of the country towns, it was being
"scooped" right at borne by a wide
awake competitor. One paper was
attending to its own business and
printing the news; the other was
making a cheap attempt to belittle the
business of the Interior newspapers,
and thereby overlooking an Interest
Ing Item right at Its own door. The
mossback Journalism of Oregon Is not
to be found In the country towns. It
Is confined to the office of the Oregon
lan's vermiform appendix.
The frultralsers who are promoting
the Dallus cannery project are taking
up the enterprise in a sensible and
business-like way. Instead of starting
out with a large and expensive plant,
they propose to Invest only a moderate
amount of money at the outset, there
by insuring a proiit to tho Btock-
lioiuers rrom tue day the doors are
opened for business. Large blocks of
stock will be held in reserve, and as
the business Increases and the invest
ment of additional capital become
necessary, these shares will bo plow;
on tho market. By pursuing thl
course, the stockholders will be pro
tectedatall timet, and the financial
success of the enterprise will be
assured.
