The way to build up Dallas is to pat
ronize Dallas people.
CANNERY WILL PAY.
A meeting of the Horticultural
Society has been called for tomorrow
afternoon to decide definitely whether
Dallas is to havo a fruit cannery, and
if so, to take Immediate steps looking
to the establishment of this new
Industry In our city.
The Observer believes there Is no
enterprise before the citizens of Dallas
for consideration that Is more worthy
of active and substantial support,
Inasmuch as the founding of this
Industry In our city would mean the
beginning of an era of commercial
growth along an entirely new line, the
results of which can scarcely be esti
mated now.
Dallas Is located In the center of a
district whose soil is unsurpassed for
Its richness as a fruit land, but the
Industry of fruit raising Is yet barely
In Its Inception. Let a cannery be
established, creating at once the
demand and the ready market for
those products, and a few years will
see such a girdle of orchards and
small fruit farms encircling our city
a 4 we haye never dreamed of.
Salem has tried It, and the suc
cessful results of Its enterprise are
manifested In tho rapidly widening
belts of well-kept orchards along
cither bank of the Willamette River
for miles above and Ix-low tho city.
Where men cultivated one acre of fruit
five years ago, they are maintaining
ten now, and are forming plans for
an oven larger addition in future.
Monmouth, our neighbor Uiwn, has
determined to establish a cannery, and
although It has no lietter support In
tho form of productive orchards back
ing it than Dallas has, tho men who
are engineering tho enterprise have
(and justly, tX)) jK'rfcct confidence in
Its ultimate success.
Wherever it has been tried in Ore
gon, this Industry has len Bueoens
ful, and thoro Is no reason why it
should not succeed In a locality whoso
resources are as great as they are in
tho country lying immediately about
our own city.

The law requlrlngcltlzensto register
before being entitled to voto Is a good
law and one that will doubtless bo
retained In Oregon. The law In its
present form, however, Is troublesome
and expensive, and should be amended
In at least one Important particular.
It should be made to provide that after
a voter has once regiHtered ho bIihII
not be obliged to register again us long
ns ho does not change his place of
residence. With tho law go amended,
It would only be necessary to reglHter
now voters aud changes of residence.
Such additions and changes in two
years would lie comparatively few In
number, and the tank of registering
them would bo light. A change of
this kind In the regintry law would
relieve tne I'ounty Clerk's oftioo of
much uiineeennary woik, save the
voters great trouble and annoyance,
and result In a neat saving to the
county every two years.

"But it is too late to buy Winter Clothing," you say. Not a bit of it-providing the inducements
are great enough. Winter is not over by any means. We can expect plenty of cold weather-more
than likely, the coldest of the year. The reputation earned by adherence to our rule of making quality
paramount to price, has given this store an unsurpassed reputation for reliability and square dealing.
