POLITICAL ADVERTISING.
The Oregon state presa association
will meet In Portland, January 17 and
18. At that meeting many questions
will come up for consideration that
vitally affect newspaper Interests. One
of these will likely be the best method
of dealing with candidates for oQlco.
Through some false impression, the
Idea bas gone abroad that Oregon
publishers are to combine for the pur
pose of "holding up" political
aspirants and making them pay fancy
prices for the privilege of being
boomed through the papers for the
offices to which they aspire. No
reputable newspaper will take this
position.
The direct primary law lays open
the way for newspapers to graft
political candidates. The man with
money to spend has a bettor chance
for election sometimes than the poor
man who Is better qualified. The
liberal spender spreads his money out
over the country, his name and bis
aspirations appear In the local papers,
not as a paid advertisement, but as a
boost of the candidate, when In fact, It
is nothing more nor less than paid
matter.
To relieve state papers of this taint
and loss of Independence, no candidate
should be allowed use of the paper
with paid matter unless it appears
under the head of paid "political
advertisement." This would eliminate
the prostitution of Journalistic Inde
pendence to the low standard of being
the avowed mouthpiece of every
political aspirant who comes along
with the clink of coin In his pockets.
No paper should fall so low as to sell
political Influence to any office seeker,
much less dispose of its independence
in job lots to every man who seeks
political preferment.
Let the state press association take
up this matter and establish itself
upon the high plane that admits
campaign advertisements as adver
tising matter only, reserving to Itself
the right to support such candidates
as It sees fit, regardless of the paid
space nny caudidatemay occupy In Its
columns. Oregon City Euterprlso.
The mohair Industry of the Willam
ette Valley will be exploited at Dallas,
l'olk County, by an Angora goat show
January 15-17. The growth of this
industry has steadilv advanced since
its first introduction, scarcely a dozen
years ago, until it has attained sub
stantial proportions. The exhibit will
be held under the auspices of the Polk
County Mobalr Association. It will
be well worth inspection, not only by
those engaged in goat husbandry, but
by all w ho are interested in the devel
ooment of the state throush a diver
sity of industries.
The prize list for the Polk County
School Childrens' Industrial Fair has
been made out and will be mad
public to the parents and children in
every district at an early date. The
exhibits will be divided into the class
for children over 12 years of age, and
for children under 12 years of age,
More stress will be laid on handi
craft at the coming fair than in pre
vious years, and every effort will be
made to induce the school children to
train their minds to plan construe
tlvely, and their hands to carry out
the3e plans in a neat and effective
manner.
