TWO GREAT CORN km.
In his little book entitled the "A B
C of Corn Culture" Trofessor Holden,
the corn expert, classifies the com root
worm and the corn root louse as the
two greatest enemies of the corn plant.
He estimates that the damage to the
crop In the corn belt alone from the
first pest is not less than 200,000,000
bushels annually. The loss Is so serious
as to Invite the attention of all corn
growers. Mr. Holden states that out
of 600 fields which he examined In
Iowa. Illinois. Kansas and Missouri
over 400 were more or less Injured by
the corn root worm. One reason for
the general lgnerance that seems to
prevail touching the damage of this
pest is that it works entirely undei
ground and gradually. The eggs, which
are laid by a little grass colored beetle
along in August and September, hatch
in the following June and early July.
As soon as they are hatched the worms
onbr fho mots nnd burrow back and
forth lengthwise through the roots and
just beneath the outside covering. As
high as 200 of these worms have been
found in a single hill of corn. The
roots attacked rot; the stalks lose theit
vitality and break over easily or fire
In the August weather. A heavy wind
storm Is likely to prostrate an entire
field. The corn root worm is liueiy xo
Infest any field which has grown corn
more than two years In succession, and
the only remedy is to put the Infested
land into some other crop, preferably
clover, for a period of two years. In
other words, damage from this pest la
practically nothing on farms where an
Intelligent system of crop rotation Is in
vogue. Ravages by the worm are sim
ply a protest against an agricultural
system that Is wrong In both theory
and practice.
Next to the corn root worm tlit
worst enemy the corn plant has to
contend with is the corn root louse oi
aphis. They are smaller than the head
of a pin, bluish green in color and ap
pear in clusters on the roots of the
corn early in the spring. They are al
ways associated with ants, which act
as their guardians, protecting them
and carrying them to the roots of the
corn. When disturbed by the ants
they exude from their honey tubes a
sweetish substance, called "honey
dew," on which the ants feed. The
damage from the corn root louse Is
done largely while the plant is young
and immature and its roots are juicy
and tender, it being the Juice in tho
root that the lice feed upon. When a
field has suffered from the lice, damago
the following season may be greatly
decreased by cultivating and harrow
ing the field thoroughly before the
corn comes up and giving it frequenl
cultivation afterward. This not only
disturbs the work of the ants, but
hastens the growth of the corn. As in
the case of the corn root worm, tho
best preventive of damage from tho
lice is a system of crop rotation, which
does not allow them to get a foothold
in the soli. Experiments conducted by
Trofessor Forbes of the Illinois experi
ment station showed that the damage
by the lice could be greatly lessened
by treating the seed before planting
with a solution made by mixing one
part of oil of lemon with nine parts of
wood alcohol, using three ounces of
tho solution to a gallon of seed. IIe
found that the ants would keep away
from corn thus treated. After six
weeks treated rows had one-ninth as
many aphides as the untreated, while
at the end of ten weeks the treated
hills of corn stood 74 per cent higher
than those untreated. In the case of
both of these pests as well as other
enemies of the corn plant damago
seems to be reduced to a minimum un
der a system of crop rotation, which
not only Is the best thing for the soil,
but produces the largest crops as well.

EXPERIMENTAL SEED PLOT.
Every farmer should have an experi
mental seed plot on his own farm.
For his corn this should be a detach
ed field or a plot at one side of Irs
main field, where he should plant corn
from the best cars he has saved. The
effectiveness of such an experimental
corn plot can bo greatly increased If
he will go through this corn just be
fore the pollen begins to shed and cut
the tassel off every stock which does
not give promise of producing a thrifty
ear. This vill effectively prevent ears
produced on thrifty stalks being fer
tilized by pollen from weak or worth
less ones. Enough seed corn ought to
be secured from such a plot to plant
the cutlre corn acreage the succeeding
season. Such experimentation Is car
ried on by many farmers and should
bo followed by many more. Tho sav
ing of seed in such manner for sev
eral years ought to Increase tho yield
of corn from the farm fist n vrhnln
many bushels per acre.
Badly Mixed Up.
Abraham Brown, of Winterton, X. V.,
had a very remarkable experience; he
says; "Doctors got badly mixed up over
me ; one said heart disease ; two called it
kidney trouble; the fourth blood pnison,
and the fifth stomach and liver trouble;
but none of them helped me; so my wife
advised trying Electric Bitters, which
are restoring rne to perfect health. One
bottle did me more good than all the five
doctors prescribed." Guaranieed to cure
blood poison, weakness and all stomach,
liver and kidney complaints, by Belt &

HANDLING THE CORN.
Experiments conducted on n number
of Minnesota farms last year under
the direction of the state experiment
station with a view to determining the
cost of producing the different kluds of
farm crops show that the most econom
ical handling of the corn crop consists
In planting thickly a relatively small
portion of the farm area for fodder
purposes, husking the main crop In the
field and pasturing off the stalks. The
shredding of corn stover was found to
bo a costly practice and only Justifia
ble when the hay crop Is short or badly
uamagcu. wme Minnesota Is outside
the limits of the corn belt, it Is likely
that the findings would be applicable
to quite a portion of the strictly corn
growlug territory, in which hay "would
not fetch better than $7 a ton.
