HOW MUCH LONGER?
Doubtless seeking to keep the public
In tbe dark as to the future proceed
ings of the city council, the charter
commission of Oregon City sought to
bare the charter amended bo as to
provide for tbe posting of city ordi
nance on bulletin boards instead of
publishing them In tbe local news
paper. Thinking to make sure of
the passage of this amendment, the
commission attached it as a rider to a
proposal to reduce the city indebted
ness by a bond issue, the latter being
a meritorious measure and one highly
popular with tbe voters and tax
payers. This direct slap at tha local
paper aroused the antagonism of the
publishers and caused tbe defeat of
the bond amendment, which would
baTe unquestionably been enacted bad
Knot been saddled with the objection
able feature. The newspapers put op
a decent manly fight in defense cf
their business, and tbe people were
fair-minded enough to recognize the
Justice of their use.
There Is a lesson In this for the pub
lishers of Oregon. In no other state
in the Union hare the newspapers been
to shabbily treated by the lawmaking
bodies as in Oregon. No move to keep
pople la the dark concerning things
thy bate a right to know has been
,t Jvrthe oorDoration-serring
Legislatures, and it has seemed the or phone Farmer frS
easiest way to aroid publicity cy ian
ingaway as many legal notices as
possible from the newspapers and
posting them on burns and gatr -posts
mh.r th least possible number of
people would aee them. Tbe latest
more of this kind Is tbe new law to
abolish advertising of delinquent tax
sales, which la to become effective next
year. This law may not be appre
ciated by the newspaper publishers
and good citizens who pay their taxes
promptly, but It will be warmly wel
comed by the "tax dodger" and "slow
payer," in whose interest it was
passed.
And so It goes. In most staV-s, the
Dumber of leeral publications is being
eteadilf increased; in Oregon, it is
being steadily diminished. Many of
the btates publish over 2'"0 different
forms; Oregon publishes less than 20.
The newspaper men of this state have
felt the injustice of It right along, and
while fully realizing that it was In
their power to remedy existing con
ditions, bave for the greau-r part
neglected to assbt in bringing about
desired result.
It is hoed that every newspaper
publisher lo Oregon will attend the
meeting of the Press Association in
Portland next month and help bring
about the organization so badly
needed fot the protection of the print
Inr business. With nlDoomroou lcrls-
latures and city councils fighting him '
on one side, and the Government
printing office competing with him on
tbe other, It Is about time for the Ore
gon publisher to exhibit a little of the
Oregon City spirit
