ronize Dallas people.
THE PARCELS POST
One of our subscribers writes as
follows:
"We see that the Postmaster General
Is going to recommend the Parcels
Post. Good for him. The merchant
can't have his wav all tho time. If he
can't make a living selling goods, let
him get out and rustle on trie rarm
like the rest of us. Is he aoy better?"
The average merchant is probably
no better than the average farmer. He
Is probably just as good, and no hot
ter; but It Is certain that he Is no more
narrow-minded than the Individual
who penned the foregoing paragraph.
The poorest man on earth is the one
who is poor in spirit and Is continually
harping that other people think they
are better than he is.
The interests of the farmor and tho
country merchant who buys tho farm
ers produceare identical, and no harm
can como to one without affecting tho
other. If the proposed Parcels Post
will Increase tho country merchant's
trade and enable him to pay the
farmor a bettor price for his produce,
'it will bo a good thing for tho country.
If it should decrease the trade of tho
country morchant and Increase tho
trade of the city mail order houses that
buy nothing of tho farmor, it would
be a bad thing for the country. The
Odskrveb thinks it would be a bad
thing. The question of ono man boing
hotter than another does not figure in
It, at all. It Is merely a matter of
cold-blooded business.
TWO TRAINS TAKEN OFF
Closing of Sawmills Necessitates
Change In Train Service on Dal
las and Halls City Road.
The condition of the lumber market
has necessitated a change in the
schedule of the Dallas and Falls City
railroad, and has resulted in the dis
continuance of the 11 o'clock train to
Falls City and tho logging train to
Newberg. The stub trains between
Falls City and Black Rock have also
been discontinued.
Theregularmorning train will here
after leave Dallas at 7:15, and will
run through to Black Rock. It will
leave Black Hock as soon as the neces
sary switching can bo done, and will
leave P'alls City for Dallas between 10
and II o'clock. The afternoon train
will leave Dallas at 3:20, and will run
to Falls City only. Returning, it will
leave Falls City at 4 :30.
As soon as the road can adjust its
business to the now conditions, a per
manent schedule will be announced.
Tho passenger coach will bo out of the
repair shop in about two weeks, and
will then be put on the run again. The
coach is being thoroughly overhauled,
and will be furnished with upholstered
leather seats. About $700 is being
expended in its improvement.
Manager Gerlinger says tho cur
tailment of train service was made
imperative by the closing down of
several of the mills and logging
camps and the uncertainty of others
continuing in operation. He is nnx
Ious to give tho patrons of tho rond
the best possible service, and will
arrange the very best train schedule
that tho business of tho road will
justify undor present unfortunate
conditions.
