ronize Dallas people.
PAVED STREETS NEXT.
The sentiment in favor of paving
the principal business streets in
Dallas steadily grows. The merchants,
without exception, want the improve
ment, and It Is believed thatu majority
of the property-owners are in favor of
it. Opinions differ slightly as to how
much navintr should be done at first,
but all agree that not less than five
blocks should bo improved as a
becinning. This would include three
blocks on Main street, oneon Mill, and
one on Court. It is believed that if a
start were once made on these blocks,
the adjacent property-owners would
not rest content until Main street had
been paved from Academy hill south
to the public school building, and
possibly those portions of Church and
Washington streets leading down
from the Southern Pacific depot.
The city has already purchased a
rock-crusher, and tho council is nego
tiating for tho purchase of a 12-ton
Bteam roller. With these two machines
already owned by the city, and with a
plentiful supply of rock close at hand,
a largo portion of tho expense of pav
ing would be eliminated, as It would
be possible for tho city to supply cer
tain necessary labor and material at
aotual cost to tho property-owners,
thus saving the profit a contractor
would bo obliged to charge to cover
tho purchase of rock and thouseof his
crusher and roller.
Tho subject of street paving is one
that Is worthy of the serious consider
ation of every citizen of Dallas. The
town has passed tho village stage, and
Is destined to become ono of the live
cities of tho Willamette Valley, in
fact, it Is already so rated, and it has
only begun to grow. Waterworks,
sewerages, electric lights, good public
buildings all of the municipal
Improvements It has, excopt pavod
stroets. Paving is tho next improve
ment to bo considered, and tho city
may as well face tho problem now.
It is truo that paved streets are
expensive, looking at tho matter only
In the light of first cost. Tho cost of
construction, however, fades into the
background, when one considers the
increased value in property that would
be sure to follow. This increase in
valuation would inoro than pay the
cost of tho Improvement, and the
property-owner would 11 ml his paving
a paying investment. This has been
tho experieneo of every city that has
paved its streets.
Nothing could bo done to advertise
Dallas more right at tho present time
than to pavo a few blocks in the busi
ness district. Eugene is just now
carrying on an extensive paving im
provement, and Eugene is tho most
talked-of town in Oregon. Tho fame
of her wiile-awako business men and
citizens is being spread by every trav
eling man, tourist and newspaper in
tho Northwest, and the city is growing
by leaps anil bounds as a result. Some
thing like live blocks vvoro contem
plated in the original paving ordi
nance, but once tho work was begun,
tho people caught the spirit of tho im
provement, and now X, blocks aro to be
paved.
The OnsKitvuu hopes that the busi
ness men of Dallas will start a cam
paign for paved streets, and never
eeaso until the woik Is actually under
way. "Paved streets for the business
district, ami cru-Jied rock streets for
the residence section" should be the
slogan. Dallas led the way in install
ing a rock crushing plant in Polk
county : sue led in securing a gravity
water supply and a system of city sew
erage. It is now up to her to load
every town in Oregon of like size by
paving her business thoroughfares.
Lane County Is now planting cher
ries on an extensive scale and will
compete with 1'oln anil Waseocounties
for the honor of bring the leading
cherry-growing county of tho state.

The New England dinner, given at j
the Woodman Hall last evening forj
tho benefit of the Dallas Free Library,
a social and financial success
Fully 350 tickets were sold, and the
banquet hall on the first floor of the
lodge building was crowded iroin j .-ju
to 9 o'clock. An old-fashioned aew
England supper, prepared by tne
women friends of the library, was
served and greatly appreciated by all.
Young women in Priscilla costume
were the waiters.
Upstairs in the main auditorium, a
pleasant social time was enjoyed by
the large crowd. A concert on a $100
Victor talking machine added greatly
to the pleasure of the merry throng.
This splendid instrument was kindly
furnished. by the Eilers Piano House,
of Portland, and was accompanied by
a representativeof the firm. The care
fully selected program was made up
of classical and popular music, and
every ntimlwr was received with favor.
Tin. kindness of tho Portland music
house in doing so much to help the
library is greatly appreciated by the
Librarian and the peoplo of Dallas.
The crowd last night was very much
larger than had been expected, only
150 tickets having been sold up to
iwerrtji v noon. Over 200 tickets were
sold at the door, and a lino of people
reaching far out into the street waueu
patiently and good naturedly for their
turn at the table. Such an immense
crowd was entirely unexpected, and
the management's only regret is that
provisions were not made for feeding
more people.
Mrs. George T. Gerlinger, who plan
ned the benefit, the women who assisted
in the committee work, and all who
contributed money and cooking for
the dinner are entitled to the warmest
thanks of the people for their good
work in behalf of the city's most use
ful institution. The money taken in
last night will immediately be given
back to the public in the shape of val
uable and entertaining books for the
library shelves. The annual benefit
is rapidly increasing in popularity,
and will hereafter be looked forward
to as one of tho leading social ovents
of tho year.

for T. A. Odom as night watchman is
nearing the $co mark. It is
probable that ho will bo appointed at
tho next mooting of the city council,
since they have promised to elect any
