carious Condition at St. Vincent's
hospital.
In advertising in our "Wanted" and
"For Sale" column, which, by tho
way, is becoming a very valuable
feature of the Ohskkvkr, our customers
often instruct us to run their locals
until such time as they are ordered
discontinued. In many instances the
customer neglects to Inform us when
ho desires tho advertising dis
continued, and tho local are run for
many Issues after they have served
their purpose, thus causing tho adver
tiser needless expense and detracting
from tho effectiveness of this column
to a certain extent. When the local
has fulfilled its purpose, we would
thank our customers to notify us by
mail or telephone, so that we may dis
continue the advertising.
The ToHtoflice Department is always
Kicking that tho low postage rate on
newspapers Is responsible fur a large
hharo of the annual deficit, and at the
same time is doing everything in its
power to establish tho Iniquitous
parcels post, which would profit only
the largo department stores and Cheap
John mail order houses. It has been
proved timo and again that tho low
rate on newspapers Is not the cause of
tho delioit, but it remains to be shown
that tho wholesale carrying of freight
by mail would not be tho biggest losing
game over indulged in by tho Govern
ment. Tho retail merchant can jiiHt
chalk it down in his book that the
adoption of tho parcels post would
spell Kuin for him in capital letters.
Tho Hillsboro Independent has
raised its subscription price to $1.50 a
year. A good newspaper, and well
worth tho money. The passing of the
$1 subscription rate has been hastened
by tho Increased cost of white paper
and tho sharp advance in wages. The
publishers who are giving their
readers newsy papers 11ml that no
one objects to paying tho higher
rate. The Ohskuvkk was ono of tho
II ml to raise its subscription price after
conditions had made it impossible to
print a dollar paper at a piollt, and
our subscription list shows that not a
single subscriber was lost by the
change. The reading public is fair
minded and does not ask tho publish
er to furnish his paper at less than
tho cost of production.
Alexander H. Collins, of Suver, a
man well-known to tho older residents
of the Willamette Valley, was severely
injured by falling from a streetcar in
Portland yesterday. The accident
oecured on Williams Avenue, while
Mr. Collins was riding out to visit E. H.
Ginty. While standing on the lower
step of the car, looking for the number
of bis friend's store, he lost his bal
ance and fell backward upon the pave
ment, fracturing his skull and suffer
ing a concussion of the brain.
The injured man was removed to St.
Vincent's Hospital, and bis son, Wil
liam, in Dallas was notified of the
accident. Mr. and Mrs. Collins left
for Portland on the afternoon train,
and meeting their mother, Mrs. Sarah
Collins, at Whiteson, the three went to
gether to the bedside of the sufferer.
Friends and relatives in Dallas
waited anxiously for some news of the
accident, and late in the evening were
relieved bv a message stating that
Mr. Collins was somewhat improved
and showed signs of regaining con
sciousness. Hojies are entertained
for his ultimate recovery, but nothing
definite can be known at the present
time.
' Judge J. L. Collins, a brother of the
injured man, was in Portland when
tho accident occurred, but heard
nothing of it until he arrived in
Dallas last night. As he boarded the
train lo Portland, he purchased a
paper, but being engaged in conver
sation until it became too dark for
him to read, he learned nothing of his
brother's injury until ho opened the
paper at his homo in Dallas.
