Mrs. Nellie Dew, of Nelsouville,
Ohio, is visiting her sister, Mrs. O. S,
Clark, whom she had not seen for over
24 years.
P. H. Morrison returned Tuesday
from a week's stay in Portland, where
he has been studying their methods of
building streets with crushed rock.
Prof. D. M. Metzger returned from
Portland, Wednesday. J. Y. Maxwell,
of Eugene, came up with him, and
will attend Dallas college this winter.
Norval Gates arrived home Wednes
day, from Haines, Baker county,
where he has been staying for the
past ten months with his uncle, Grant
iloberg.
J J. H. Dancy was in town this week
on business connected with the Pacific
States Telephone Company, of which
be is the Polk and Marion county
representative.
' Von Casey visited at the home of his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. Casey, Sun
day. He has been making his home
in Southern Oregon for the past few
years, but left on Monday for Montana.
The new bowling alley recently
installed at the pool room is proving
quite an attraction, and rivalry
between the young men of Dallas for
the highest score, is growing stronger
every day.
'Howard YanAuken and Chester
Phelps, of Los Angeles, arrived in
Dallas, Wednesday, and are visiting
at the home of the latters uncle, A. H.
Phelps. The young men will probably
spend the winter here.
- Cornelius Hughes called at the
Observer office yesterday, and left
some samples of his curious apricot-
plum which was mentioned in one of
oar former issues. The fruit is of an
excellent flavor and good color, and
can doubtless be cultivated into a val
uable marketable product.
The Townsend creamery is now well
under way and is receiving a rapidly
increasing patronage from all the
farming country bordering on our
town. The churning is done every
other day, and many visitors are
attracted thither to watch the inter
esting process of manufacturing
butter by strictly modern methods.
Mrs. Roy Webb was very painfully
injured, Tuesday, by being thrown
from a buggy in a runaway. - The
horses became frightened at the Falls
City train near the crossing beyond
the old Harris property and bolted,
throwing Mrs. Webb out of the rig
upon her face, Her nose was broken
and she sustained several severe
bruises on her head and body, but it
la thought that none of her injuries
are extremely serious.
Frank Pepper went to Portland yes
terday on business.
Mr. and Mrs. George Gerllnger
wero visitors in Portland, Wednesday.
Charles Mayfield, of Alrlie, was a
business visitor in Dallas, Wednes
day. John VauOrsdel and'Harry Byers
have gone to Newport on a cruising
expedition.
E. A. Carlson and family, of Olym
pia, Washington, are visiting this
week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. T.
Johnson.

Wednesday's rainstorm fortunately
came too late in the season to cause
serious damage in the hopyards, as
nearly all of the crop had already
been picked.
Several people have reported seeing
large flock of wild geese headed
southward Wednesday morning. Ifj
this is true, it would appear that we
must expect an early and hard winter.
John Woods arrived in Dallas this
week from Starbuck, Wash., and is
visiting his mother, Mrs. Sarah
Woods. Since leaving Dallas, he has
been engaged in railroad work, the
greater part of the time in Arizona
and Sonora, Mexico.
Prof. I. M. Glen and family, who
have been spending the summer on
the Lyle farm, will go to their home
in Eugene today. Mrs. H. L. Veazie
will also return to her home in Port
land for a few days stay and then
leave on a trip to Japan.
W. R. Howe has harvested and dis
posed of his entire crop of peaches,
and there are still many people desir
ing to order from him. The excellent
quality of the fruit made the demand
for it so great that it was impossible
to furnish peaches to all who desired
them.
A floe "Clipper" seed cleaning ma
chine is being set up in Ray & Stoner's
feed store and will be operated by
their electric motor recently secured
from the Willamette Valley Electric
Company. They are already using
the latter to rua the chopping machine,
and are highly satisfied with its evi
dent superiority over the gasoline
motor that they formerly used.
H. C. Dimick, owner of the Dallas
Derry stage line, was a visitor in
Portland this week. Returning home,
he was accompanied by Mrs. 0. E.
Scovill, a sister of Mrs. Dimick, who
is now visiting at the Dimick home.
Mrs. Scovill's former home was in
Portland, Maine, but recently she
came west to Seattle. The two sisters
had not seen each other for 43 years.
Mrs. Scovill is 76 years old and Mrs.
Dimick is 64. The two sisters are
enjoying a glad reunion, and before
parting again will have their photo
graphs taken to send to another sister
still residing in Portland, Maine.
Attorney Oscar Hayter was in Cor
vallis on a business visit yesterday,
Henry Clanfleld, of Salt Creek, was
a business visitor in Dallas yesterday,
Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Hopkins, of
Falls City, were visitors in Dallas,
Wednesday.
Miss Hortense Kimball, of Port
land, is visiting her father, S. P.
Kimball, in Dallas this week.

Jost, at the home of her parents, Mr,
and Mrs. T. D. Phillips, a son.
Mrs. S. J. Richmond acd grand
daughter, Miss Leone Williams, went
to Portland yesterday for a short
visit.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Moffat and
Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Dillard, of Texas,
have been in Dallas this week trying
to secure houses, as it Is their inten
tion to make their homes here.
Rader, of Willamette University,
famous in the northwest as a full
back, and well known to the basket
ball fans of Dallas for his ability in
that game also, will attend the uni
versity at Pullman, Wash., during the
coming year.
John Wyatt was in town, Saturday,
to take home a thoroughbred buck
that arrived that day from the Stump
farm in Polk county. The animal
weighs 310 pounds and was a first
prize winner at the St. Louis exposi
tion and again at the Lewis and Clark
exposition in 1906. Corvallis Gazette.
W. R. Howe has sold his grocery
store to the Dallas Mercantile Com
pany, which took charge of the
establishment and began invoicing
the stock yesterday evening. This
department of their business will for
the present be conducted in the build
ing it now occupies, as there is not
room to install the stock in their other
store.
Wr.H. McDaniel was a heavy loser
by Monday's fire, which destroyed the
bam on his farm near Rickreall. The
building contained 1200 bushels of
wheat, 800 bushels of oats, 30 tons of
loose hay, 25 tons of baled hay, and
several sets of harness. Two fine colts
were also burned to death. Mr. Mc
Daniel says no gasoline or other
explosives were stored in the barn,
and the origin of the fire is a mystery
ine .Dallas puolic school will open
September 23, and Principal Hill
desires that all pupils commence on
the first day, as a day or week lost $
hard to regain. The Oregon Text
book Commission has adopted a large
number of new books, but the pub
lishers will allow a 50 per cent reduc
tion in the exchange of old books.
No allowance will be made in the
exchange of books of different grades.
W. D. DeVarney, of the Home Tele
phone Company, Albany, accompanied
by W. F. Jeffries, of Portland, and a
mechanic, drove over to Dallas from
Salem yesterday in his fine Knox
touring car. Mr. DeVarney said that
he was surprised to find that the road
between Dallas and Salem was in
much better condition for auto-
mobiling than any of the other roads
in this part of the valley. The distance
between the Willamette Hotel, Salem,
and the courthouse square, in Dallas,
is exactly 15.2 miles according to the
register of his autometer.
