LOYAL TO MOTHER NORMAL.
The loyal friends of the Oregon
State Normal School at Monmouth
have some to the rescue of the Insti
tution and have met the conditions
imposed by the new board of regents.
Messrs. Ressler and Perkins appeared
before the executive committee in
Salem last week and tendered a check
for three thousand dollars as a dona
tion to conduct the school during the
ensuing year. This is one half of the
required amount and the board has
allowed until the 1st of February for
the deposit of the balance. Other
revenues from tuition and local tax
ation (including 7 mills special tax)
will add between eight and nine
. thousand dollars. The budget for the
year has been reduced from nineteen
to fourteen thousand dollars by cut
ting down the salaries of the instruc
tors, with their full consent, an act of
devotion which shows their loyalty to
the old school.
It will be remembered that the old
board of regents, at its annual meet
ing in June, re-elected the faculty, let
contracts for fuel, and otherwise pro
vided for the continuance of the Mon
mouth Normal. The new board, at
its meeting July 13, accepted the
action of the old board and assumed
full control. At a later meeting, Aug
ust 20, it rescinded its former action
on the ground that the law prohibited
the assumption of any obligations in
excess of the probable revenues.
Since the appropriation, vetoed by the
Governor, could not become available
until passed upon by the next legis
lature, tne board decirted that no
account could be taken of it.
This caused the board to vote not to
continue the school until a sufficient
sum was deposited as an absolute
donation, which, together with the
other fixed revenues, would place
enough funds at its disposal to guar
antee the expenses of the institution
for the entire year. Now that this has
been done and the donation accepted
by the executive committee, Monmouth
is officially authorized to continue
and will therefore open its door3 on
September 24 for its twenty-sixth
year. The business-like methods of
the new board, the personnel of its
membership and the increased de
mand in the state for Normal trained
teachers, all combine'to make the
prospects bright for the best year in
its history. Its friends are rallying
about it as never before.
Monmouth has sent out over 850
graduates during the past twenty-flve
years and thousands of others have
received a partial preparation for the
work of teaching. Ten of the thirty
county superintendents are graduates
and scores of principals in the towns
and villages claim her as their alma
mater, while hundreds of others are
grade teachers in the town and coun
try schools. With these loyal children
and the thousands of friends over the
state, the Mother Normal looks forward
with confidence to the verdict of the
people at the polls next June, when
the question of its continuance is to be
submitted through the initiative.
QUIET HOME WEDDING
Miss Ethel Corbin Becomes the Bride
of Mr. A. J. Holllngsworth,
of Grants Pass.
The Rev. A. J. Holllngsworth, of
Grants Pass, and Miss Ethel Corbin,
of this city, were wedded Wednesday
morning at the home of the bride's
parents, her father, the Rev. A. C.
Corbin, officiating. The ceremony took
place at seven o'clock, in the presence
of a few intimate friends.
After the ceremony an elaborate
breakfast was served, and the happy
couple left by way of Independence
for their future home at Grants Pass,
Mrs. Hollingsworth ha3 won many
friends in Dallas by her winsome
modesty and ready helpfulness, and
the crood wishes of all who know her
will speed her on her southern jour
ney. Mr. Hollingswortn is recog
nized as a man of rising talent in the
ministrv of the denomination which
he serves.
Hop Crop a Quarter Short.
One of the best-posted and most con
servative hop men in the trade, a
grower as well as a dealer, said to the
Oregoniao, yesterday.
"I am certain that the output of hops
in Orecron will be 25 per cent short of
the previous estimates. One quarter
of the crop will not be picked, owing;
in the first place, to the scarcity of
money, and in the second plaoe to dam
age caused by last week s ram storm.
Lice and mold are a serious matter in
some sections, but fortunately the
damage is not general by any means.
It is only in isolated spots where the
trouble has appeared and there the
ruin is practically complete. In yards
where there is only a sprinkling of
mold, such hops will be left unhar
vested. The hops that are gathered
will nearly all be of the best quality."
After being confined to his bed for
several weeks with a broken leg, Earl
Shelton is able to be out again by the
aid of crutches.

A friend at our elbow suggests that
the newspaper men of Oregon would
better be careful what they do at the

a trust. Not a bit of danger. Nobody
ever heard of two newspaper men

subject.
It was perfectly proper for Governor
Chamberlain to appoint a Circuit

O'Day being a candidate to succeed
himself at the noxt election might at
least have been postponed until after
the body of Judge Sears was laid

Electricity for Lighting
Is only expensive to people who are
wasteful and careless. To you, who
are naturally careful, it does not
come high.
It is economical because it can be quickly turned off wnen not needed
With gas or kerosene there Is the temptation to let light burn when
not needed to save bother of lighting and adjusting. In some homes
the electric light bills amount to only one or two dollars per month
lou can probably get some kind of artificial light for less money
than electric light, but does it save you anvthing when it limits op
portunities for work and recreation ruins your eyesight smokes
your walls mars decorations and increases household work You
could probably save a dollar tomorrow by going without your 'meals
but it wouldn't be economy. It is not so much what you save but
how you save that counts. '
