The way to build up Dallas ts to pat
ronize Dallas people.
DALLAS POINTS THE WAY.
It has remained for Dallas to lead
the way ! the work of permanent road
improvement In Polk county. With
the spirit of progressiveness that has
developed the town from a cross-roads
village to a thriving manufacturing
and Industrial center in the space of a
few brief years, the latest move in the
direction of greater progress is the pur
chase of a rock crusher, to be used in
building streets that will withstand the
constantly increasing traffic. The
action of the council is of immeasur
able importance, as good streets are all
that is lacking to make Dallas a
strictly modern city in every respect.
All the other conveniences we have-
lights, water, sewerage, modern fire
apparatus, good sidewalks, and sub
stantial public buildings. Now, with
clean macadam streets, Dallas will eas
ily take first rank among the beautiful
and attractive towns of the Willamette
Valley. And after our streets are
improved, may it not be that we will
lend a helping hand to our farmer
friends in building good roads into
Dallas from every direction? In con
sideration of the loyalty of these neigh
bors in wading through bottomless
roads all these years to trade with our
merchants, and in view of the greatly
increased business that good roads
would bring, Dallas can well afford
to aid these farmers in building per
manent thoroughfares by placing her
road machinery at their disposal, or
by selling rock tolbe county at a fig
ure so low as to place the further use
of worth less gravel out of the question.

generously to the premium list and the
Executive Committee, directed by
County Superintendent Seymour, is
sparing no effort to arouse interest
and enthusiasm in the fair. Large
posters advertising the exhibition will
be off the press this week and will be
given liberal distribution lo the var
ious school districts of the county.
Ships Fine Goats.
U. S. Grant, the well-known breeder
of registered Angora goats, made
shipments of buck kids this week as
follows: O. W. Cartwright, Sabinal,
Texas, three; J. N. Ross, Sonora,
Texas, four; Mrs. J. Maukina, Globe,
Arizona, one; Walter Pitt, Andrews,
Nebraska, one; J.C.Turner, Lyons
ville, California, four; John Farmer,
McMinnville, Oregon, one. The Grant
stock is becoming famous In all parts
of the United States, and the demand
for these fine animals greatly exceeds
the supply.

The good friends of the Monmouth
Normal school have put up enough
money to start with, and have enough
in sight to run a year. The state will
re-adopt that school, as it should, as
soon as it has a chance. Salem
Statesman.
A. J. Barham has received a letter
from Grinnell, Collins & Company, of
Minneapolis, requesting the names of.
apple raisers in this locality and say
ing that they desire to purchase
several carloads of first-class apples.
Polk county has the apple raisers and
the first-class fruit, and will have
more of both within the next few
years. Judging from the interest that
is being taken by the farmers, it will
not be long until the hills around
Dallas will be one vast apple orchard.

In Washington next winter. He
ought not to find the job a difficult one,
since Ben Jones took half of the work
off his hands at the last session of the
Legislature. Here, also, i3 a chance
forBr'er Hawley to rise and shine. It
will be remembered that Hawley
worked against the Jones bill, giving
as his reason that he wanted to get the
entire appropriation from Congress,
but Jones evidently considered the job
a little too hefty for a raw Congress
man to tackle, and so split it in half
with him. It is now up to the Oregon
delegation to "make good" in Wash
ington.
In purchasing a rock crusher,
which will require a considerable
amount of money, it will be well for
the city council to require a strict
guarantee that the machine will do
the work it is represented to do, and
that it will have the proper wearing
qualities. There are many grades of
crushers on the market, eellinK at
widely varying prices, and as none of
the city officers are machinery experts,
the interests of the people can be safe
guarded only by requiring a strict
guarantee of efficiency and lasting
quality. If this Is done, no loss can
result. The council owes this duty tc
the taxpayers, and as the members
are all practical business men, It is
only fair to assume that proper pre
caution will be exercised in the draw
ing of the contract for the purchase of
the machine.
