"JUST TO FILL UP."
The editor of the Eugene Guard pays
his respects to dead-beats In the follow
ing declaration of independence :"Said
a well-known business man to us the
other day: 'It would not hurt you to
occasionally mentioo our business in
the paper. It would help to fill up,
you know.' Yes, we might do it We
haven't the least idea on earth that it
would hurt us, and it would, as he
suggests, help to fill up. We might
do all this, but at the same time, thank
God, we do not hare to do it unless we
. feel like it. It would not hurt him,
either, to come around and say: 'Give
me a column or a half column of space
for an advertisement, and here Is the
money to pay for it.'"
The Guard is right. There is no
class of men on earth that does as
much hard work, without compen
sation, as the newspaper men. Do you
ever see the grocer spending his time
and good hard coin in telling the peo
ple what a fine stock of goods his
neighbor, the drygoods merchant, is
putting in? Do you ever notice tne
banker paying young men and young
women weekly wages to go about tell
ing the people of the fine new machin
ery that Is being added to the soap fac
tory, or or the soap man consuming
valuable time in praising the enter
prise of the banker in putting in a new
burglar-proof safe and metal vault
furniture? It is safe to say that you
never hear anything of the sort, and
yet this is what the newspaper editor
is doing every day and week of the year
and he does it without money and
without price. The editor who is loyal
to his town, and who takes pride in
seeing it grow and prosper, does these
things cheerfully and willingly,
usually without a thought of compen
sationas often, likely as not, the
recipients of these favors are contrib
uting little or nothing to the support
of the paper,
The enterprising editor is always
glad to say a good word for the enter
prising business men of his town,
although knowing full well that the
chances are even that he will never
receive one word of thanks for his
exhibition of kindness and good-will.
He does this willingly, although con
scious that every line of type in his
paper costs him money, and that if
nobody else pays for it, the expense
will have to come out of his own
pocket.
It Is this state of affairs that causes
the self-respecting newspaper man to
have small patience with the profes
sional dead-beat, who is always seek
ing to profit by the brains and labor
or others. The editor is always look
ing for something to "fill up" his
columns, but he likes to use his own
judgment as to the quantity and
quality of the "filling."

Folk County Farmer Falls From
Top of Separator With Ser
ious Results.
Henry McDowell, a farmer of Polk
county, who resides a few miles from
Salem, was severely injured by falling
from the top of a separator which he
was driving on the farm of R. Eunice,
Monday about 1 :30 p. m. McDowell
was driving a four-horse team, using
four lines. The links which fastened
the tongue to the axle suddenly broke
and he was pulled off his seat by the
lines. He fell head foremost to the
ground, aligbtingon one hand and the
side of hi3 face. When he got up he
found that his forearm was broken
and that he had been severely bruised
about the head. He immediately went
to his home and Dr. W. H. Byrd of
Salem was summoned. On examining
the patient he found that the injuries
to the head were nothing more than
bad bruises, and that there were no
internal injuries. Salem Statesman.

Over one hundred new dwellings
have been erected in Dallas this year
and still there are not enough to sup
ply the demand from those who want
to reside in that enterprising city.
That sounds good from a prosperity
standpoint. However, its Board of

encourage the building of more struct
ures so as to hold the new-comers, who
are desirous of settling there. Salem

Electricity for Lighting
Is only expensive to people who are
wasteful and careless. To yon, who
are naturally careful, it does not
come high.
It is economical because it can be quickly turned off wnen not needed
With gas or kerosene there is the temptation to let light burn when
not needed to save bother of lighting and adjusting. In some homes
the electric light bills amount to only one or two dollars per month
lou can probably get some kind of artificial light for less money
than electric light, but does it save you anything when it limits op
portunities for work and recreation ruins your eyesight smokes
your walls-mars decorations and increases household work You
could probably save a dollar tomorrow by going without your meals
but it wouldn t be economy. It is not so much what you save, but
how you save that counts. ' '
