It is said by the fruit farmers in the
Salem district that the Phenomenal
berry will eventually supplant the
Loaanberrv. The reason for this
opinion is that the sharp acid of the
Losranberrv attacks the metal of the
cans, making it impracticable to seal
them In any but glass jars. While
this will not impair their value for
domestic use, it will put them entirely
beyond the pale of commercial value,
except as they can be sold while fresh
On the other hand, the Phenomenal
berry has all the good points of the
Loganberry and Is also well adapted
to canning, because of its sweetness.

In advocating the establishment of
a free library in its home city, the
Albany Democrat truthfully says that
"the public library has become as
much a necessity as streets and sewers
and Is a part of a prosperous city
government." The people of Dallas,
where a free library has been success
fully maintained for three years, will
heartily indorse the above sentiment
To Mrs. George T, Gerlinger and the
good women who so ably assisted her
with their time and talents in
establishing the library and placing
it on a solid foundation, our city owes
a debt of gratitude it can never pay.
In a letter to the California Fruit
Grower, H. C. Atwell, president of the
Oregon State Horticultural Society,
estimates the output of prunes this
year at 22,000,000 pounds for Oregon
and 5,000,000 pounds for Washington.
This is a larger estimate than was
made by growers earlier in the season.
Prices range high in the Northwest,
while in California the market is
almost at a standstill. A large portion
of California's old stock has been con
tracted for August and September
shipment at prices ranging from 3c to
4-e. The appearance of these old
prunes alongside of the new crop from
Oregon and Washington will not be
such as will redound to the credit of
California, but will serve as an excel
lent foil to set off the merits of our
shipments.

O. L. Carter will arrive home from
Idaho tonight. His son Ralph met

Miss Marie Griffin has gone to Cor
vallis for a three weeks' visit with her
aunt, Mrs. M. E. Cumming.
Dr. Martin's meeting at theChristian
tabernacle will positively close Sunday
night. Don't fail to hear him.
The Willamette Valley Electric
Company is installing the two large
water tube boilers which they recently
received from the East.
R. R. Woods, of the Dallas Hotel,
went to Salem, Saturday, to meet and
escort to Dallas, his wife and son, who
had come thither from Roseburg.
Frank Grubbs, a son of Dr. and
Mrs. J. C. Grubbs, formerly of Dallas,
was recently married in St. Germain,
Washington, to Miss Lydia Solandt,
of that city.
The work of Installing the Townsend
Creamery Company's branch cream
ery In Dallas was commenced yester
day. The machinery will be installed
in the Brown building on Mill street,
formerly occupied by Vaughn &
Weaver. A smooth concrete floor is
being laid to furnish a stable base for
the assembling of the machinery. The
machinery is expected to arrive in a
few days and will be set up and placed
in operation as soon as possible. The
motive power for the churns and
separators will bo furnished by gaso
line engine.
