election of C. L. Starr to the office of
Secretary of the State Normal Board,
the Salem Journal says: "Secretary
Starr has a reputation of being one of
the most progressive county super
intendents of the state. He recently
resigned to become editor of a country
newspaper, when he was getting $1000
a year, which shows that he is a man
of nerve and enterprise."

interior will take business away from
them and divert it to the metropolis,
may be somewhat relieved by the
information that an Albany job
printer has gone into the Portland
field and secured a large amount of
work, doing work to the amount of
$2000 a year ror one Portland mer
chant Lower rent lower wages,
lower living expenses, lower insur
ance, enable the Albany printer to
compete with the Portland houses.
In many other lines of industry the
same thing can be done, and will be
done more extensively when lower
passenger fares and a more frequent
service afford better means for com

The Tabernacle meetings conducted
by Dr. Martin are well attended this
week. His sermon on "Popular
Amusements" on Sunday night drew
the best audience thus far In the meet
ing. It was an able sermon and was
almost universally commended. The
meetings will probably close oa Sun
day night
While in Falls City last Friday, we
found Merchant Tnoze busily engaged
In preparing goods to be shipped to
his new branch store at Black Rock
The Falls City store now occupies five
floors and a large annex. Fourteen
clerks are employed in the store, and
all are kept busy. Mr. Tooze Is plan
nine many improvements to enable
him to better handle his rapidly
growing business.
While working in the timber above
Black Rock yesterday, Earl Shelton,
logger in the employ of the Spauldlng
company, met wmi an accident wnicu
resulted in a broken leg. Few
particulars are available, and it is not
known whether the injury was caused
by a falling tree or a rolling log. His
father came down from laws City
this morning and took Mrs. shelton
back to nurse the invalid.

Notice For Publication.
W. O. Trine, better known to the
sportsmen of the Northwest as "Dad"
Trine, died Saturday night at Cor
vallis from a cancer of the face.
"Dad" Trine was an authority on
horses, and was well known and
respected by those who frequented the
track at the State Fair. As a trainer
of track teams, he stood without a peer
in the northwest, having turned out
more record breaking men in all
departments of athletics than any
other coach. He never resorted to
"dope" to stimulate a man to record
feats of speed and endurance, and he
never employed underhanded or
unsportsmanlike methods to win a
single one of the many track meets In
which he carae otf victorious.
For five years he was coach of the
U. of O. track team and for four years
physical director at Corvnllis. He
had also coached In most of the lead
ing clubs and colleges In Washington,
and not one of these has anything but
good to Bay of him as a man and as a
trainer.

A pitiful tragedy occurred at Pedee
yesterday morning in the drowning
of the one-year-old daughter or Mr.
and Mrs. A. Burbank. The parents
of the little girl had left her on the
porch, and, not thinking of danger,
did not notice her disappearance for
some time. When her absence was
noted, a frantic search was made and
it was soon discovered that the child
had strayed into the water closet,
where she had met death by drowning.
Every effort was made to resuscitate
the little body, but all in vain. So
fearrul a blow, falling with such
stunning unexpectedness, will call
out the deepest sympathy of all for
the bereaved parents.
