At the recent State Grange meeting
in Hood Eiver, Hon. I. M. Simpson
was appointed a member of the com
mittee on Education. Mrs. Simpson
was given a place on the Legislative
committee.
Miss Aurelia Burch, a daughter of
JudgeS. T. Burch, of Rickreall, and
Miss Mabel Cooper, a daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. J. S. Cooper, of Inde
pendence, are members of the gradu
ating class at the University of Oregon
this year.
The Dallas public school will close
one week from today. On the evening
of June 17, the eighth grade class will
give an appropriate program. All
friends and patrons of the school will
be invited to attend these exercises.
The program will be published next
week.
R. E. Williams and I. N. Woods
have been appointed to confer with
the Southern Pacifio Company and
the Independence Motor Company in
an effort to secure special excursion
trains from Airlie and McMinnville
on the Fourth. It is believed that the
request will be granted, as special
trains will assure a large attendance
from the Luckiamute country, north
ern Polk and Yamhill county.

Yesterday was a great day for resig
nations of officers in Polk county.
Four officials resigned, namely, School
Superintendent Starr, Surveyor Van
Orsdel, Janitor Trent and Road Super
visor F. J. Morrison. The Court ap
pointed Roscoe Winslow to succeed
Mr. VanOrsdel as Surveyor. ,
Finding that his newspaper property
and real estate business at Falls City
was demanding his entire attention,
C. L. Starr yesterday filed his resig
nation as School Superintendent of
Polk County. The resignation will bo
accepted by -the County Court, and
H. C. Seymour, the present capable
deputy, will be appointed to fill the
vacancy.

in Dallas daily at 3 p. m., connecting

G. W. James came up from Newberg
and took charge of the Southern Paci
fic office, Tuesday. William Brown,
who has had charge of the office since
I. N. Wood3 resigned from the service,
was transferred to Coburg. Mr. James
is one of theoldestand most competent
men in the employ of the company.
His family is still In Newberg, but will
join him here in the near future.
Married in Fails City.
Mr. Clifford Hutchins, of Black
Rock, and Miss Edith Brown, a
daughter of A. W. Brown of this city,
were married at the residence of the
Rev. G. F. Rounds, pastor of the M. E.
church in Falls City, Saturday, June
1. The young people are in every way
deserving of a happy married life,
which their many friends will wish for
them. Mr. and Mrs. Hutchins will
make their home at Black Rock after
June 9, where Mr. Hutchins has a new
home built for his bride.

The Class Day exercises held on the
College campus, Wednesday after
noon, were largely attended, and were
greatly enjoyed by the students and
their Invited friends. The burlesque
orations furnished great amusement
for the young people, and the
numerous jokc3 at tho expense cf the
faculty and class members added
merriment to the program.
The annual musical recital on
Tuesday evening was one of the most
pleasant events of the week. Professor
Caldwell's pupils gave a program of
rare excellence, showing the capable
training they had received during the
year. Those taking part were Misses
Ada Longnecker, Merle Hall, Hallie
Morrison, Virginia Miller, Bessie
Gooch, Ella Roy, Winnie Kelly, Elsie
Keyt, Messrs. William Caldwell and
Lisle Rice. A vocal solo by Frank
Snyder, the favorite baritone, and a
reading by Miss Naana Forbes were
pleasing features of the program.
The Alumni Reunion was held on
Wednesday evening in the Evangel
ical church. After a short musical
and literary program, the members of
the association held their annual ban
quet at the Hotel Gall.
The commencement exercises on
Wednesday morning drew the largest
crowd of the week, every seat in the
large church being occupied. The
members of the class were Misses Alta
Savage, Frankie Hayter, Messrs. Clar
ence Dodson, Harrison Barendrick,
Walter Crltchlow, J. Dean Collins and
Orrie Arnold. The orations were well
delivered and showed careful prepa
ration and thorough knowledge of
the respective subjects. An eloquent
address to the class was delivered by
Rev. J. Bowersox, of Portland. The
degrees were conferred and the diplo
mas presented by President Mock.
The graduates were remembered by
their friends with a wealth of beauti
ful flowers.
The year just closed at Dallas
College has been highly successful-
more successful than any preceding
year In the history or tne scnooi.
Time has shown that the Trustees
made no mistake when they advanced
Dr. Mock to the Presidency of the
institution. His work at the head of
the college has demonstrated his fit
ness for the position. In a few brief
months, he has done more to placo the
school on a sound basis and to bring
about a feeling of mutual Interest
between the town people and the
college than was done in all the years
before he took charge. The people of
Dallas have always felt kindly toward
the college, and it only required
man like Dr. Mock to
orlve them an opportunity to
prove their friendship and loyalty
Assisted by such faithful and conscl
entious workers as Professors Metz
ger, Dunkelberger, Fisher and Rev.
Winter, Dr. Mock will spend much of
the summer vacation in the counties
of western Oregon in the interest of
the school, and it is safe to predict
that when the doors open again next
Fall the number of students will show
an increase that will prove a glad sur
prise to even the most sanguine
friends of the college.
