CREAMERY MEETING
The farmers living in the west end
of Polk county want a creamery.
They are not particular whether it is
operated on the co-operative plan or
by private capital, so long as it is
operated honestly and furnishes a
market for their milk.
A well-attended meeting was held in
Brown's Hall last Saturday afternoon
and the subject of creameries and
cheese factories was discussed at
length. Every farmer present ex
pressed his preference for a creamery
over a cheese factory, giving as
reason that in furnishing cream to
creamery all the by-products of the
milk are kept on the farm. .
George W. McBee, of Liberty
called the meeting to order and stated
its obiect. He spoke briefly in favor
of a creamery in Dallas, and urged
the importance of prompt action in
getting started before the beginning
of the dry season.
W. H. Besecker, of Dallas, spoke in
favor of a creamery and gave his
reasons for so doing. While he pre
ferred a creamery, he would patronize
a cheese factory if he could not do
better.
J. H. Brown, of Salt Creek, also
favored a creamery. He believed that
a creameiy operated by private
capital would prove more satisfactory
and profitable to the farmers than
one conducted on the co-operative
plan, but declared that he would
gladly patronize either. He said folk
county was behind her sister counties
in the rapid extension of the dairying
industry, but that there was no reason
why such a condition should be per
mitted to continue. "Old Polk should
not take a back seat for any of them,"
declared Mr. Brown.
Cephas Nelson, of Oakdale, spoke
for a co-operative creamery and told
of the success of the co-operative plan
in his former neighborhood in British
Columbia. Mr. Nelson made an
interesting talk and held the closest
attention of his brother farmers while
explaining the methods of conducting
a creamery on a co-operative basis
Like the speakers who preceded him,
he said he would heartily support a
priyate creamery in the event that a
mutual plant could not be secured.
Hiram Windover did not favor the
co-operative plan, and said he would
not take any stock in such a concern,
but promised that he would furnish
milk to a creamery or either kind.
N. P. Rasmussen, of Rickreall, said
he would patronize a private creamery
or take stock in a co-operative com
pany. He wanted a market for his
milk.
Hon. George Myer, of Smithfleld,
said he would patronize a co-operative
creamery, but believed that under
present conditions a plant operated by
private capital would be better for the
farmers. As a proposition to establish
a branch creamery in Dallas had
been made by the T. S. Townsend
Creamery Company, Mr. Myer moved j
that the meeting adjourn until Satur
day, June 1, at 10 o'clock a. m., and
that Mr. Townsend be invited to meet
with the farmers at that time. The
motion carried without a dissenting
vote.

Why 6hould Oregon iraport a mil

of poor quality at that, when here in
the Willamette valley lies as fine a
dairying section as can be found any
where? Oregon is capable of produc
ing about everything necessary to
supply human needs, and four times
as much as th state can consume.
Home production and export is the

the exports over the imports the

Electricity for Lighting
Is only expensive to people who are
wasteful and careless. To you, who
are naturally careful, it does not
come high. .. v
It is economical because it can be quickly turned off wnen not needed
With gas or kerosene there ishe temptation to let light burn when
not needed to save bother of lighting and adjusting. In some homes
the electric light bills amount to only one or two dollars per month
You can probably get some kind of artificial light for less money
than electric light, but does it save you anything when it limits op

your walls mars decorations, and increases household work. You
could probably save a dollar tomorrow by going without your "meals
but it wouldn t be economy. It is not so much what you save but
how you save that counts. . '
