BENTON HAS KICK
If Benton county people had a real
ization of what the new apportionment
of senators actually means they would
be up In arms. Its effect is to practi
cally wipe Benton off the map so far
as representation in the state senate
is concerned. Benton is joined to
Polk, and Benton is much the smaller
county. The selection of senator is
under the primary law, and voters
will very likely stick to their own
county man in preference to a candi
date for senator in another county.
Benton's show for a senator under
those conditions will be very slim.
It Is the worst deal Benton ever got
at the hands of a legislature. We
used to have a senator, a joint senator
and three representatives. We have
dwindled and dwindled through the
gerrymandering process at Salem un
til practically all we have left, after
Senator Johnson's present term, will
be one lone representative. What
commanding position for an old and

large crowd of people. Lloyd Lau nor,
one of Dallas' men, sustained a severe
ankle bruise durlna the game, but no
serious results are feared and he will
nrobablv be in the earne for the re
mainder of the season.

Multnomah 10; Monmouth 15, Port
land Y. M. C. A, 13. The next league
game In Dallas will be with the Mult
nomah team on Saturday evening,

Yamhill Capitalists May Build From
Sherlun to Grand Ronde
Country.
No tax rebates will be allowed after
Friday, March 15, and the rush of tax
payers who are desirous of saving the
3 per cent reduction will be heavy
from now on. Taxes will become
delinquent on the first Monday iu
April, but by paying one-half of your
tax before that date you will be given
until the first Monday in October to
pay the remaining one-half without
Interest or costs. It would be a dlffl
unit matter to frame a more effective
tax law than the one now In force in
uregon, anil it is lucky for the state
that this meritorious law was not
tinkered with by the recent Legisla
ture.
I he people's Legislature deprived
the people of Polk county of one-half
of their rightful representation in the
Senate. Pretty tough medicine, but
this people's Legislature said we must
take it.
uia rolk Is one of the few counties
in Oregon that, will have to pay its
share of that four-milliou-dollar ap
propriation bill and get absolutely
nothing iu return.
CITY ELECTION BOARD
A railroad from Sheridan to Willa
mina is likely to be built by private
capital. The Palmer Lumber Com
pany and the Edwards Pressed Brick
Company and many citizens of Yam
hill county are back of the scheme.
On account of the fine timber near
Willamina and the whito and blue
clay, it is thought the railroad woiUd
pay from the first. One of the finest
granite quarries In the country is on
Willamina River near the town. The
prospective builders are not blind to
the fact that this road Is pointing to
the Grand Ronde Gap, which leads to
Tillamook. This gap is said to be by
far the lowest In the Coast Range
Mountains. Over this route people
going to the coast go in rigs pulled by
a single horse.
This road, if built, will tap the
Grand Ronde Valley, which Is rich In
agricultural products and is sur
rounded by enough timber to keep
large mills running for half a cen
tury. It Is said this road can be
built at comparatively small expense,
as there Is little grading to be done,
the country being as smooth as a
floor. One small bridge only .will
have to be constructed.
As the Indians in the Grand Ronde
Valley are now getting deeds to their
land in severalty and may sell with
out restriction, it Is expected that there
win be a rapid transfer of property
and a corresponding development of
this rich valley.

Dr.
E. M. Younsr, a prominent hon
dealer of Independence, shot Asa
Taylor and his father, City Marshal
Robert Taylor, Saturday evening
about 6:30 o'clock, wounding both,
though not seriously. The troublo
arose over the impounding of Young's
dog. Young and Asa Taylor met on
the street and an altercation ensued,
with the result that Taylor is said to
have attacked Young with his flstp.
Young thereupon drew a revolver
from his pocket and fired once at his
assailant, the bullet striking Taylor
In the shoulder.
At this juncture, City Marshal
Robert Taylor, father of the wounded
man, rushed up. Young turned his
weapon upon the elder Taylor, and
fired two shots. The bullets struck
the Marshal Iu the arm and shoulder,
inflicting painful though not serious
wounds.
Young was later arrested by the
Constable, and furnished the required
bonds for his appearance, and was
allowed his liberty.
The principals are well known res
idents of Independence, fc. M. Young
is a prominent dealer in hops, while
Asa Taylor is the proprietor of a liv
ery stable. Robert Taylor Is City
