The County Board of. Equalization
is in session. A visitor to the court
house would not know that such Is the

Coad, Clerk Smith- and Assessor
Graves are to be found In their
respective offices, attending to their
usual routine work. The reason for
this inactivity on the part of the
nffirarH as an equalization board is
found in the fact that so far no tax
payers have appeared to object to their
assessments.
The tax roll for the year 1906 con
tains manv items of interest to the
taxrjaver for the reason that the old
method of placing low valuations on
the various classes of property has
been abandoned. Perhaps the changes
of greatest interest are found in the
valuations placed on the property of
the railroads and other public service
corporations this year as compared
with the assessment of the same
property last year.
The Southern Pacific Company's
roadbed on the Yamhill division is
assessed at $7000 per mile, as against
$3000 last year. The West Side lines
are assessed at $8000 per mile, as
acrainst $3500 in 1905. The timber
land owned by the company reaches a
total of $800,080, as against $321,310
last year. The valuation of the com
pany's contract lands has been raised
from $41,440 to $121,010. The valu
ation of the company's rolling stock
was doubled, and amounts to about
$840 per mile.
The Oregon Telephone & Telegraph
Company is booked for $16,670, as
against $7,500 a year ago.
The Western Union Telegraph Com
pany will be called upon to pay taxes
on $4000 worth of property this year.
Last year the assessment was only
$2450.
The valuation of the Spauldiug Log
ging Company's lands has been in
creased from $11,640 to $40,130.
The property of tho Salem, Falls
City & Western Railway Co is assessed
at $62,850 as against $22,530 last year.
W, C. McClure's timber holdings in
the Siletz country are booked at
$125,000. Last year these lands were
assessed at $37,210.
N. P. Wheeler, whose timber land
In northwestern Polk county was
largely purchased from the Indian
reservation, will pay taxes on $92,00',
as against $33,320 in 1905.
The Siletz Timber Company, which
owns L. Gerlinger's original holdings,
is assessed at $32,400.
The above showing includes only a
few of the larger and wealthier cor
porations owning property and doing
business in the county. Tho assess
ments of numerous sinallercompanies
and corporations have been raised in
like proportion, and real estate valu
ations have been practically doubled.
The total valuation of assessable
property in Polk county will be about
$8,760,000 this year, as against
$4,035,000 last year. In adopting the
policy now in vogue in all the counties
of the state, that of assessing property
at something near its cash value,
Assessor Graves has made a conscien
tious effort to give all classes of
property-owners a fair deal. The
plan of assessing property at its cash
value is new in Oregon, and it re
mains to be seen whether it will prove
popular. That the taxpayers are will
ing to give the plan a fair test is
shown by the fact that few, if any, of
them have appeared beforo the Board
of Equalization to object to the raise
in the valuation of their property. If
a reduction is made in the tax levy in
proportion to the increase in valua
tionand there is every reason to be
lieve that the County Court will
make such reduction there will bo
little cause for complaint in any
quarter, and Polk county will make a
much better showing to the outside
world than under the old system of
low valuations and high levies.
The Graphic would have It appear
that Newberg led all other valley
towns in freight shipments for the
month of July, and publishes a state
ment furnished by the local station
agent in support of its claim. The
editor boasts that his town was second
only to Portland in the number of
cars shipped during the month, and
that Dallas, with a total of 137 cars,
was third in importance as a shipping
point in Oregon. The Graphic took
its figures from the monthly statement
of the Pacific Northwest Car Service
Association, and anyone who knows
how these reports are made up knows
that that they do not show anything
like the actual amount of freight
handled at each station. The publi
cation in the Newberg paper is un
important further than it makes a
claim for the town that cannot be
substantiated by the actual figures,
Newberg is a lively town and is grow
ing rapidly in commercial importance,
But it is not the second city in Oregon
any more than is Dallas the third
citv. It is hichlv probable that the
Southern Pacific agent will get
strong call-down from his company
for giving out such misleading in
formation.

Miss Laurie Burnett returned to
her home in McMlnnville, Saturday,
after a visit with her sisters, Mrs
C. W. Irvine and Mrs. J. D. Whiteaker,
Rev. Elayer has finished two years
work as pastor of the Methodist
church here and left Monday for Mt,
Vernon. Miss., where he will have
charge of a church.
The Ladies' Aid Society of the
Methodist church gave the pastor,
Rev. Elaver and wife a reception at
the home of Judge and Mrs. B. Wilson
Friday evening. The house and
lawn were beautifully decorated and
refreshments were served during the
evening.
Will Depart From Dallas.
Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Collins are pre
paring to leave for their new home
near Walla Walla, Wash., and will
sell their household goods at public
auction tomorrow morning. Mr. and
Mrs. Collins greatly regret to leave
Dallas, where they have lived for so
manv vears and where they have
formed so many fond ties and associ
ations, but feel that the change Is for
the best, as Mr. Collins enjoys much
better health in the high altitude of
Eastern Washington than in the moist
climate of the Willamette Valley
Their departure will be deeply re
gretted by a wide circle of friends.

gests that the Polk cou nty roads should
be kept oiled during the summer
months. Has Editor Lyon ever
figured how many barrels of oil it
would take to oil the main traveled
roads of the county? And how much
the oil would cost laid down where
needed? Polk county is a long way
from the oil fields.

dition of the hops is improving
steadily, notwithstanding the ex
tremely hot weather, and the crop is

An Odd Flower.
Mrs. Anna Coad, of this city, is the
possessor of one of the most remark
able plants known to the floral world
the night-blooming cereus. The
plant belongs to the genu's cactus and
Is peculiar in that its flowers endure
only for part of a single night. The
flowers bear some resemblance to a
water lily in shape, and are almost
snow-white in color. The buds begin
to open soon after dark and the flowers
usually reach their greatest perfection
about midnight. An hour or so later
they begin tocUseand beforedaylight
diop from the stem. Surely, the night
blooming cereus is one of the flowers
that are "born to blush unseen," and
its sweetness would be wasted were it
not for the fact that Mrs. Coad's neigh
bors often call at the house and watch
these buds until a late hour that they
may at last behold the flowers in
their full fragrance aud beauty.
Returned From Outing.
Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Ellis and Miss
Mabel Guy arrived home Tuesday
afternoon from Newport, where they
enjoyed a pleasant five weeks' vaca
tion in their cozy cottage. Mr Ellis
comes home thoroughly rested and
refreshed, and ready to take up the
management of his big store and
prune orchard with renewed energy.
He says the outing season is prac
tically over and people are leaving
Newport at the rateof several hundred
a day.
