The way to build up Dallas ts to pat
ronize Dallas people.
FOR A HIGH SCHOOL.
The widespread sentiment iu Dallas
in favor of a public High School will
probably take definite shape at the
annual school meeting one week from
next Monday, when it is believed the
voters will authorize the school board
to add at least two, and possibly three
grades, to the present public school
course. The matter of providing a
suitable building to accommodate the
increased number of pupils that the
extra grades would add, will, in all
probability, be considered at that time.
The sentiment in favor of a good
High School in Dallas has been
steadily growing for many years, and
such an Institution is now looked up
on as a public necessity. It is doubt
ful if a dozen voters could be found in
the district who would oppose such an
Institution for the free education of
the boys and girls of Dallas in the
higher branches of study. Nor could
any move be made that would add
more to the growth and prosperity of
Polk's county seat town than the
location of such an institution of
higher education in the district.
Dallas already has an excellent
public school, where nine grades are
taught by -a corps of competent in
structors. The work of this school is
thorough and efficient as far as it
goes, but there is a general feeling
among the parents of the district that
It does not go far enough. The people
feel that a town of the size and com
mercial importance of Dallas should
maintain a higher and better free in
stitution for the training of the boys
and girls of the county. Dallas Is
the proper pluce for a first-class high
school, as it is centrally located and
would draw support from all parts of
the county. '
The business men and property
owners of Dallas could not make a
better move than to secure tho estab
lishment of a first-class High School
In the city. It would mean a steadily
Increasing population from the day it
was opened, and would prove an in
valuable factor in advancing the
prosperity of the town. Dallas is
already one of the important manu
facturing centers of Western Oregon,
and Its population Is destined to be
made up largely of the laborlngclass.
These are honest, hard-working people
who depend upon their daily wages
for a livelihood, and few, if any, of
them are able to give their children a
college education. While these parents
are anxious to give their children a
good start la the world, only a email
number are able to give their boys
and girls any educational advantages
beyond the present rudimentary
course. With a good free High School
lu Dallas, the children of the poor
would be given equal educational ad
vantages with those of the rich, and
the result would bo to the best interest
of all.
Publio high schools are rapidly
growing In favor in Oregon, for the
reason that a large per contage of tho
pupils now attending college have not
advanced beyond the common school
studies, and the tuition and incidental
expenses of these studonts is a much
heavier burden on the parents than
their share of the taxes would bo in
maintaining a good free HighSchojl.
There will always be room for the
colleges that are doing strictly col
legiate work, and such institutions
need have no fear of being injured by
the growth of the high school move
ment. The high school hus Its place
in the educational world, and no town
of Importance should be without one.
With the establishment of a good
twelve-grade school, free to all the
boys and girls of Dallas, the people of
the district will have taken an im
portant step In the right direction,
and it now seems certain that the
voters will authorize this greatly-
needed improvement In the public
school system. at the meeting to bo
held on Monday, June 18.
He would be a mighty hard man to
please who cannot get a grain of
comfort somewhere along the line in
Monday'selection returns. The Demo
crats can be thankful that they got
their Governor; the Republicans
should feel jubilant over the election
of the remainder of .the State ticket,
the Legislature, and a United States
Senator; the Prohis should rejoice
that it was no worse than it was, and
the Socialists should bethankfu) that
they were permitted to vote at all.
They are talking or holding an
apple show In Dallas this year. The
project is a good one. Some very
handsome apples are raised in the
vicinity of Dallas and the holding of
apple shows would tend to bring ubout
the production of more such apples as
well as of calling attention to those
now raised. Rural Northwest.
The spectacular fight for the office
of Sheriff of Multnomah county re
sulted in the election of Robert Stevens
by a plurality of 5 votes. Stevens
took the oath of office as soon as the
count was completed. Sheriff Word
announces that he will contest the
election of his opponent if the official
count shall show Stevens still in the
lead.
Ueorge U. crowneu, who did more
than any other one man to fasten the
Populistic initiative and referendum
upon the fair State of Oregon, was de
feated for re-election in Clackamas
county, Monday, by a majority of
nearly 600 votes. It is the beginning
of the end.
Statement No. 1 was not an issue in
Polk county. It Is doubtful If one
voter in a hundred even gave it a
thought when voting for the candi
dates for the Legislature.
Oregon is undoubtedly the only
state in the Union where one Demo
crat can and does uniformly outvote
three Republicans, sagely remarks
the Oregon ian.
The voters must have taken Gov
ernor Chamberlain at his word whon
he suid that the Governor and the
Legislature should be of opposite
politics.
Dr. McCallon was elected In spite of
the fact that he failed to heed Editor

To Establish Milk Routes.
D. H. Mclntyre and J. C. Hayter
drove out to the Liberty schoolhouse
Wednesday night and held a meeting
with the farmers of that neighborhood
in the Interest of the Dallas cheese
factory, Mr. Mclntyre explained the
best methods of handling milk, and
pointod out the many advantages a
cheese factory has over a creamery as
a source of profit to the farmers.
George McBce, who presided over the
meeting, made an excellent talk in
favor of the industry. Many questions
were asked and answered, and a
lively interest was manifested in the
new factory. The meeting will prob
ably result in a milk route being
established in the hill country west of
Dallas. Similar meetings will bo held
at Oakdalo, Rickreall, and other
points in the near future.
