entitled "Polk's Proud Portion," the
Sunday Oregonian pays a fine tribute
to the banner mohair county of Ore
gon. That paper says :

Judge Hunt Sentences Congressman
Williamson'', to Serve Ten
Months In Jail.

Indians have slaughtered many
Ton months Imprisonment and a
fine of $500 was tho sentence pro
nounced upon Congressman J. N.
Williamson in the United States court
Saturday by Judge Hunt of Montana,
when Mr. Williamson and his associ
ates in the trial appeared for sentence.
Calmly, with his hands la his pockets,
a serene look upon his face and With
out a flinch, the Eastern Oregon con
gressman and sheep rancher took his
sentonco, and when asked if he had
anything to say why sentence should
not be pronounced upon him he
answered laconically:
"I guess It has all been said, judge."
Marlon R. Biggs, the United States
commissioner, who was also sentenced,
received tho same sentence, and Dr.
VanGesner, Williamson's partner in
the sheep business, who is old and in
ill health, was given five mouths in
the county jail and ane of $1,000
was exacted from him.
Judge Bennett counsel for Con
gressman Willlamsou, Interposed an
objection on the ground that his client
was a member of congress, and the
Imposing of sentence would interfere
with his attendance at Washington
and conflict with his constitutional
rights. This was overruled.
On application of tho defendant's
attorneys, stay of judgment was
granted, ponding the perfecting of an
appeal.

Missouri's state building at the
Lewis and Clark Exposition, together
with the valuable art exhibit of the
St. Louis Artists' Guild, was totally
destroyed by fire Friday night in the
first great fire of the Fair. The total
loss is placed at not less than $50,000.
The total insurance was only $5000,
on the art gallery. The fire started in
a pile of excelsior and boxes in the
rear of the building, which had been
placed there for use in the packing of
the exhibit
The total numberof Eastern visitors
to the Lewis and Clark Fair, as shown
by the validation of tickets, was
108,507.
