INSIDE INFORMATION
Quiet
Hotel
Tip to Persons Seeking
Accommodations at the
Big Fairs.
At the World's Fair, St. Louis, the
hotel within the grounds is called the
Inside Inn. The capitalists who built
this famous hostelry will probably
erect a similar building on the Lewis
and Clark fair grounds at Portland.
An Eastern exchange tells of a visitor
to the St. Louis Fair, (probably Judge
Sibley or "Uncle" John Castle) who
timidly walked up to the desk and
asked: "Is this the Inside Inn? And
if so, is the proprietor of ihe Inside
Inn in?"
"Yes," replied the smart clerk, with
a far away look in his eyes, "this Is
the Inside Inn, and you will find the
proprietor outside by the Inn's side.
He has been keeping the Inn for
several weeks. He tells me that once
when he took an ocean voyage he
couldn't keep his inside in, but that
was inside Information, and he didn't
intend to get it outside."
"Alright." said the guest, "if this is
the Inside Inn, we want to see its in
side as well as its outside before we
look inside any of the outside inns. If
we like the Inside Inn's inside and
outside better than we like the outside
inn's outside and insido, we may
bring our things from outside inside
and stop inside the Inside Inn, be
cause we won't have to go from the in
side outside or come back from the
outside inside when we're seeing the
Fair, butcan remain inside or outside
the Inside Inn, it being the only inn
inside the grounds. The other inns
are on the outside and furnish no
more comforts for the guests inside or
outside than does the Inside Inn with
the exhibits close outside the Inn's
side that is the Inside Inn's side. In
) )
But the clerk had fainted and fallen
inside the Inside Inn's desk, and bell
boys were hurrying with water for his
outside and brandy for his inside, but
in their excitement they got that which
was meant for his inside outside and
that which was for his outside inside."

Entertained Large Audience.
The people of Dallas enjoyed a de
lightful hour of song and story at the
M. E. Church last Friday evening, it
being the occasion of Miss Elizabeth
M. Pollock's elocutionary recital. The
program was an excellent one,
and tne large audience was
more than pleased with the enter
tainment. Miss Pollock is an elocu
tionist and impersonator or rare
ability, and presents a wide range of
work. She is graceful and natural In
her readings, and holds her audience
spellbound by her character portrayal
and expression. It would be hard to
say that one number on the program
was oetter tnan anotner-tney were
all good. Miss Pollook was assisted
by Miss Hallie Morrison, Miss Irma
Smith, Prof. H. H. Dunkelberger and
Carl Williams, who gave some ex
cellent vocal solos and duetts. The
entertainment was financially suc
cessful and will net a neat sum for the
treasury of the Epworth League,
under whose auspices the recital was
given.

BEE HIVE STORE
DALLAS, OBEGOI.
"Portland people little realize how
the state at large is growing in popu
lation," said H. V. Gates, of Hills
boro, who is in Portland today.
Mr. Gates owns electric light and
water plants at Heppner, Prineville,
Klamath Falls, Elgin and Dallas
and his business keeps him on the
move throughout the state all the
time.
"I see houses going up by the score
everywhere," he said, "and I should
judge that the smaller oities of the
state have grown fully one-third in
population within the past year. Even
a little town like Dallas, in Polk
County, has a hundred new houses.
This means a housing capacity of 400
persons added to Dallas, which had a
population a year ago of 1500. The
new houses are filled with occupants
as fast Aa they are finished, and other
new foundations are laid.
"There is growth, growth, every
where. In Eastern Oregon new farms
are being cultivated on what have
heretofore been sheep ranges, and the
sheep are dally being restricted to
closer quarters. Lands that were
formerly considered 'scab' and worth
less, except for grazing, are producing
good crops under improved systems
of cultivation, and the farmers are all
prosperous." Evening Telegram.

Polk county has sustained her repu
tation as the leading Angora goat
county in the United States. County
Commissioner William Eiddell re
ceived word from St. Louis this week
that out of his flock of pure-bred An
goras recently sent to the big Fair ex

stakes, two firsts, one second and one
fourth prize. His fine stock has been
the center of attraction for goat men
visiting the Exposition. The honor of
winning these prizes is one of which
Polk county may well be proud, and
Mr. Eiddell and his sons are to be
