IMMENSE LOG DRIVE Seven Million Feet of Timber Now Floating Down Willamette River to Oregon City. One of the most interesting sights ever seen along the Willamette wus the elean-up of the gang of men of the Sp mlding company as they dislodged the logs which had accumulated in the drive down the river, says the Albunv Democrat. The company had seven million feet of loss in the Willamette, which were cauthooked from the banks aloner Albany. A force of about twenty-five men did the interesting work in two squads, one on each side of the river. Several ex perts manipulated the rolling.slippery logs with an ease that attracted atten tion, often taking the smallest log to be found and running it as smoothly as a boat. In shallow places horses are required for the work, and they sei-m to enjoy it as much as the men. One animal has been with Mr. Spauld ing six years and is never so happy as when driven into a stream. Two rafts are used for the horses and a bigger one with a cover for the sleep ing and dining necessities of the trip. It is hard, hungry work, and some days four meals is the order. Many a ducking is gotten, and part of the work itself is in the water. When the camp passes a town the boys some' times have a time. One who drew last night, this morning remarked, "but I haven't got it now." The logs are taken to Newberg, where there is a big mill, and to the paper mill at Oregon City. They are white and red fir and some hard wood mixed with it. Besides the work of driving, it means months of hard work by a large force of men towards the headwaters in falling and rolling them into tin: water for their ride down stream. Fine Walnut Orchard. Are English walnuts a success in Oregon? For the answer to this ques tion people in this part of the state have turned their attention to the Dundee forty acre orchard of young trees, u couple of miles southwest of here, which is just now coming into bearing. And tho answer must be decisively in the affirmative. Captain G. W. Peters, who is in charge of the orchard, says there will be a line crop this year, and that the trees are rug ged and healthy. Of tho nuts he says he cannot speak too highly. The trees bore some nuts hist year, which were compared with samples of those raised in Franco and in different parts of this country, including California, and Mr. Peters declares tho Oregon product far superior to anything he has seen. It is much larger, and of much better flavor. He is well ac quainted with tho California walnut district and he looks for this section to surpass it, when the industry is inee established here. Up to Aug. 25, eighty-seven per cent of tho test cases were either well or progressing favorably. There being but thirteen per cent of failures, the parties were satisfied and closed the transaction. The proceedings of the investigating committee and the clinical reports of the test cases were published and will oe mailed free on ap plication. Address John J. WORLD'S FAIR GROUNDS, St. Louis, August 2 Several Oregon counties have sent excellent adver tising matter to be placed on display in the state exhibit at St. Louis, and the results obtained will be good. Too much cannot be said of the judicious publicity given to county resources, for it will do more to secure new people for the state than any other form of advertisement. How many people will move to Ore gon on account of the state display in St. Louis is of course beyond estima tion, but there will be great numbers. Muny pass through the building every day with the announcement that they are coming to Oregon in 1005, and coming to stay. IDEAL HARVEST WEATHER Wheat Crop of Willamette Valley Will Be Saved Without Loss. Hot weather, uninterrupted harvests and excellent yields, is the tenorof the climate and crop bulletin for Oregon, issued Tuesday morning from the local Weather Bureau. It follows : Tho ptist week averaged the hottest of the season. It was also dry, except iu tho high level sections in the eastern portion of tho state, where n few show ers cccurred last Tuesday and Wed nesday. The grain harvest has pro ceeded uninterruptedly, and threshing has now become general. Fall wheat yields are everywhere good, and in the eastern sections they are general ly excellent. Early-sown Spring wheat and oats, although having thin stands and short straw, are turning out bet ter than expected, but more than tin usual quantity of late-sown Spring wheat and late-sown oats has been cut for hay. The weather of the past week has been ideal for the growth of the hop plant and most encouraging reports tire being received from all yards. The burr is coming out full and strong, and there is less foliage and more bloom than is usually tho case. No estimates of a crop less than last year's are heard, and in some quarters it is predicted that the yield will run near the 100,000 mark, but conserva tive hopmen still place their figures at iiO.OOO bales. One thing is certain, and that is that the quality of the Ore gon crop this year will be unusually good. Very few reports are received of lice, and where any appears, spray ing is promptly resorted to. Advertises I'olk County Abroad. B." "It's a bad time to swap horses when crossing a you are stream." That was Lincoln'9 famous reply to those who urged him to make a change in generals at a critical period of the Civil war. Lincoln's saying is worth remember ing, especially when you are asked to "swap' Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery for a bootless bargain, de scribed as "just as good," at the critical time when health is at stake. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discov ery is a medicine which has a record of ninety-eight per cent, of cures. It is an absolutely reliable family medicine, non alcoholic and non-narcotic. It always helps; it almost always cures. Why should any one who is seeking a cure for sickness, and is persuaded that the "Discovery" will cure him, "swap" the substance for the shadow at the risk of health ? Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discov. ery cures diseases of the stomach and other organs of digestion and nutrition. What is popularly termed "weak" stom ach is the common cause of various forms of physical weakness, such as "weak" heart, "weak" lungs, "weak" or slug, gish liver, "weak" nerves, etc. The entire body and its several organs are dependent for strength upon the food prepared in the stomach. The weak stomach cannot provide the food strength for the various organs, which in their turn become weak and unable to accomplish the work for which they were designed. "Golden Medical Dii covery" cures through the stomach dis eases which have their cause in a dis eased condition of the stomach and the allied organs of digestion and nutrition It enables the perfect digestion and assimulation o food bv which the body is built up into a condition of sound health. It purifies the blood, driving out the poisons which breed and feed disease. Preferred to Die.
