i. - TROLLEY LINE TO SALEM Promoters of Portland Southern Railway Expect to Begin Grad ing iii Thirty Days. The promoters of the double-track electric railway to be built between Portland and Salem declare that the work will be completed and cars run ning over the line within the next twelve months. The company is also considering the advisability of build ing side lines to Dallas and Silverton as feeders to the main line. The fol lowing interview with L. B. French, one or the jn-omotors of the road, ; appears in Thursday's Salem States man : "V.u T think at the latest, twelve months from now will see the eomplc tion of the road from Portland to Sal em." said Mr. French. Our people mean business, and are ready for it. Th monev is ready. We know where it is coming from for the construction y.f tllft V.lllll (111 H.l'ft not worrying at all about other people who doubt." "Wiimi u-Mi viiii twain work, Mr. T. ..... j -O- French?" was asked. "We were ready to put our engineers at work on Monday," was his reply "but I find we are now liable to have M antra nur mute Oil BCCOUUt of ofn riiTlit of wav ouestions. One or two men are holding out, in the region beween Brooks and Salem, and it may lm tmuaililn we mav cut across the Southern Pacific tracks at Lake La bish and come up on the west side of the Southern Pacific line. We are offered right of way there, and also some other inducements, if we desire to take thorn." "There is some question, Mr. French, as to whether your road will do Salem the good that it will Portland," was remarked. "You may say this," was his reply, "that where Salem has 13,000 people, who might go to Portland, that city has over a h undred thousand who may come to Salem. This proposition will be borne out here as it has in all other districts in the East, where the circum stances are similar. Of inter-urban traffic under all conditions, GO per cent is 'tourist travel.' "I have had occasion.' added Mr French, "to notice other eases (inula- cons to the present one, and I have vet to see a case where the smaller town was not remarkably benefited.' Mr. French said he had little more to say than had already been publish ed, but that the company which he represented would bo at work as soon as possible on tho line. Surveyors have already laid out tho route in a preliminary way, over the hills back of Cauemah, and he expects to get the rest of tho line located as fast us pos sible. "One more thing," said Mr. French ; "if nobody else builds your side lines to Dallas, Silverton, etc., we will do that after our main line is completed, for they are necessary as feeders to tho main line." wJam,jJtm.J.-!"w11""""1111' ""IIIIMI l 1 "I Con't think we could keep bouse without Thedford'i Black Dranffht. Gibbous, a well-known stock man of Ronton county, brought four hogs to Corvallis, Friday, that furnished a practical object-lesson in feeding for profit. Ho bought tho hogs 10 weeks ago, when they weighed 250 poinds gross. He bought $0 worth of chopped grain, which was his only cash outlay for feed. They wero fed all the milk and feed they could cat, and at the end of the 10 weeks dressed UH pounds. Adding one-third more for live weight, it shows a gain of about 525 pounds. Mr. Gibbons cleared over $25 on tho four hogs In 10 weeks. Two Portland men have been in the city wtith their automobile They handled their machine well and were entitled to credit for care and con sideration, appreciating the rights of horsemen. They have been over the country a good deal, and one of them statod that they had never had any trouble in meeting or passing teams. The automobile is here to stay and the horses must get used to them. Chaffeurs should use great care until the now conditions have adjusted themselves. Albany Democrat. DeWitt Is the Name. THEDFORD'S r- ADVANCE IN HOPS Twenty-two Cents Paid for Hops in Marion County. 1904 The 22 cent mark for 1901 hops was reached in Salem, Saturday, when Catlin & Linn sold 100 bales of their growing crop to Krebs Brothers at the figure mentioned. The Seavy crop of 300 bales at Eugene has been con tracted at 21 cents, but the name of the buyer, who lives in Washington, can not be learned. Nearly all the Salem buyers have orders for contracts at 20 cents or more, but it is understood that only a few contracts are being made. Catlin & Linn, who sold at 22 cents, are buyers for Eastern firms, but are also growers, and the hops they sold are their individual property. The market at Salem seems to be strengthening rapidly, for 20 cents was reached only a week ago, and then by an advance of 2 cents. pre- BRIGhTS DISEASE. "It's a bad time to swap horses when you are crossing a stream." That was Ivincoln's famous reply to those who urged hira to make a change in generals at a critical period of the Civil war. Lincoln's saying is worth remember ing, especially when you are asked to "swap" Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery for a bootless bargain, de scribed as "just as good," at the critical time when health is at stake. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discov ery is a medicine which has a record of ninety-eight per cent, of cures. It is an absolutely reliable family medicine, non alcoholic and non-narcotic.
