formerly Hazel Butler, have been in
the city visiting relatives for several

J. T. Beezley, who is the Republican
nominee for Treasurer, was in Inde
pendence, Sunday, doing a little
missionary work for the June election.
Considerable work is being done in
the Chapter degrees of Masonry lately,
and a number of extra sessions have
bjen held for the conferring of de
grees. J. . Kirklaud has had plans and
specifications made for the building
of a brick where his wooden building
is located and expects to begin work in
a month or so.

been visiting relatives and friends
here, were passengers to Corvallis the
llrst of the week.
Miss Aldrich, who graduated in
Monmouth in the February class, was
selected a few weeks ago to take the
place of Miss Iliff who resigned from
the schools here.
Mr. Thomas and family, of Virginia,
and Mr. Hamilton and family, of
Tennessee, located in this city during
the last week and expect to make Polk
county their future homo.
W, B. Petteys, who has been at Van
couver for several months, returned
home Friday. He says that his wife's
health is no bettor and that he will re
turn to Vancouver soon.
Cyrus Purvine, who was visiting
hero a few weeks ago has written that
ho expects to be here in the latter part
of May and make arrangements to
open up a machine shop.
W. T. Hoffman, John Howell and
J. H. Hawley left for Nevada where
they expect to look over the mining
property in which they are interested
and from which they expect big re
sults. The coming Saturday evening an
Athletic and Musical entertainment
will be given at the Stato Normal by
the students at that place. An in
formal reception will be held for
friouds, and a special motor will run

Joseph Tuck, a brother of Mrs,
Hawkins of Dallas, was struck on tho
head with a hook at McCormaek,
Washington. Ho was immediately
removed to a hospital at Centralia,
.and was unconscious when word was
received of him here. Ho is a member
of tho I. O. O. F. lodge of this place,
and well known here.
Report was sent to the Independence
Improvement League that no money
would be available for improvement
on the upper Willamette, or for com
pleting tho work on the revetment
here, unless an extra appropriation
eould be secured, for which it is
understood Senator Mitchell is now
working.
Mr. Ziegler, a former Stato Normal
student at Monmouth, has been elected
to take the place of Deo Simpson, who
has resigned. Dee has taught here
for about two years, and his health
gavo away a few months ago, necessi
tating a change. He has decided to
go into tho mountains for a few
months.
The Whist Club held their meeting
at the home of Mrs. Will Walker, on
Friday night. Tho pins were won by
Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hubbard. Dr.
Butler feels rather despondent to think
that tho pin has been at last taken
away from him. He had been wear
ing it continually for a number of
weeks.
Independence was treated to a good
theatrical troupe on Thursday, Friday
and Saturday. Wiedemann's big
company, with their special car, put
on throe different plays. They have a
base ball team with them ami on Fri
day afternoon they met the Oregon
State Normal team and a good game
.of nine innings was played, the score
staudiug 4 to 1. From here they went
to McMinuvillo where they play for a
week, and they also have made ar
rangements to play a game of ball at
that place.
