YESTERDAY'S PRIMARIES.
The Republican primaries hold in
the several precincts yesterday after
noon were orderly and quiet, as
primaries in Tolk county always are,
and the contests were remarkably free
from partisan bitterness, notwith
standing the intense interest and en
thusiastic work of the friends of the
various 'candidates. The attendance
was unusually largo in every precinct
although tho weather conditions were
ideal for outdoor work. Irr a majority
of the precincts, the vote cast;in the
primaries was larger than the total
Republican vote in the same precincts
at the J line election two years ago an
attendance unheard of before in Polk
county primary elections. Interest
throughout the county centered in the
contest in the three Dallas precincts,
and the battle hero was close and ex
citing. Tho Kirkpatrick ticket was
elected in North Dallas and East
Dallas, and was defeated in South
Dallas. Complete returns from the
county will probably be in this morn
ing, and the candidates for the various
offices can now get busy figuring on
their chances for nomination in to
morrow's convention.
Until tho returns are all in, it will
bo difficult to estimate tho relative
strength of all the men who are
aspiring to tho office of Senator, for
the reason that in several precincts

New developments in regard to the
land frauds came to light in the
United States court, when Dan J,
Tarpley, of Salem, waived arraign
ment on a charge of conspiracy to de
fraud the Government of lands and
was released on $4000 bonds. Tarpley
was one of the persons indicted along
with S. A. D. Puter, Marie Ware and
H. G. McKinley in the first indictment
returned by the Uuited States Grand
Jury at its last session, but his name
was not at that time made public.
Mr. Tarpley is an attorney, practic
ing in the Capital City, where he has
lived for many years. He is well
known iu tho Willamette Valley. Mr.
Tarpley was notified Monday by
United States District Attorney Hall
that he had been indicted by the
Grand Jury, and immediately started
for Portland prepared to give what
ever bonds were necessary. When
interviewed in Salein before his de
parture, Mr. Tarpley did not appear
worried over his indictment.
The indictment of Mr. Tarpley is in
connection with the investigation of
the doings of the timber land ring
which operated in Lane and Linn
counties. H. G. McKinley, Miss Marie
Ware, S. A. D. Puter and Mrs. Wat
son arrested in Chicago last Friday
were indicted by the Grand Jury last
Summer during the investigation of
the alleged frauds. Puter, Miss Ware
and McKinley have been out on bonds
since their indictment.
