PolS County Observer J. C. IIAYTEIt, EDITOR AND PUBLISHER. Publlnhed Weekly at One Dollar per Yeai. Strictly in Advance. DALLAS, OREGON, FBBRlMaT 5, 1904 The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronize Dallas people. The Independence correspondent of the Oregonian hands out a column of "dope" concerning the political situation in Polk county in Tuesday's issue of the big daily. What the writer of the article doesn't know about prespnt con ditions would fill a large book. Among the inaccuracies noted is the statement that Seth Riggs i8 mentioned as a possible candidate for County Commissioner, and one would be led to believe by reading the article that Mr. Riggs is a Re publican. As Mr. Riggs' lime does not expire until July, 1906, it is hardly likely that he will be a candidate at this time, and, even if he were, his Democratic pro clivities w ould not be calculated to win any great strength for him in the Republican convention. Neither is it likely that the Republicans will fall over themselves in an effort to nominate Luther Ground, the present free-silver Democratic surveyor, who is also classed by the Independence writer as a Re publican. Other inaccuracies in in the article in question could be cited, would time and space per mit, but the foregoing is sufficient to show that the correspondent didn't have any well-defined idea of what he was talking about. The time for filing petitions under the Populistic initiative will expire at 12 o'clock tonight. Friends of proposed laws have had all kinds of trouble in getting their petitions in legal form, and it seems probable that the. petition for the submission of the direct primary law will be the only one that will have a sufficient number of properly verified signatures. Of all the impracticable foolishness ever indulged in by the people of Oregon, the adoption of the initia tive easily stands at the head. Polk county has 4,276 million feet of red fir timber, and 178 million feet of red cedar. The cut area is 3 square miles, and the burned area 10 square miles. The average stand of timber per acre of timbered land is 22,900 feet, board measure. If the county had no other resources, the value of this timber alono would insure her future prosperity. Enjoyable Concert. The concert given by Mrs. Hallie Farrish Hinges, of Salem, in the Dallas M. E. Church on Tuesday eve ning was the most enjoyable musical event of the year. Mrs. HiDges was In excellent voice, and her rendition of "The Holy City," "My Rosary" and a "Japanese Love Song" especially delighted the audience. Each number on the program was heartily applaud ed, and the lady graciously responded to encores. Mrs. Hinges' voice is as clear and faultless as in the days of her girlhood, when her singing won for her the title of "The Oregou Nig htlD gale." Miss Ertna Smith played the accompaniments with rare skill. A reading by Miss May Shelton and a recltatiou by Dan Poling were pleasing features of the program. The concert was given under the auspices of the Ladies' Aid Society. Kay For Sale. Good cheat and wheat hay for sale by Abch Mver, Dallas, Oregon. The transfer in volved in coin and stock fl 12,500.00 and was paid by a party of business men for a specific for Bright's Disease and Dia letes, hitherto incurable diseases. They commenced the serious Investi gation of the specific Nov. 15, 1900. They interviewed scores of the cured and tried it out on its merits by putting over three dozen cases on th treatment and watching them. They also got phy sicians to name chronic, incurable cases, and administered it w ith the physicians for judges. Up to Aug. 25, eighty-seven per cent of the test cases were either well or progressing favorably. There being but thirteen per cent of failures, the parties were satisfied and closed the transaction. The proceedings of the investigating committee and the cliniefti reports of the test cases were published and will be mailed free on ap lii'Htion. Ailrirven Jon J. People rushed from their doors and strained their eyes on the struggling balloonist fighting for life. Even the poor, pant ing sufferer in the sick rootti was for- tyotfan nrViilAtli. fntll- ily gazed breathless at this strange tragedy of the air. Then they went back to the sick room to tell of the terrible struggle for life they had just witnessed. It did not occur to them that under their very eyes a more terrible, more pathetic struggle was going on daily. There cau be nothing more pitiful than the struggle the consumptive makes against disease. The greatest help in this struggle is gained by the use of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Dis covery. It cures obstinate coughs, weak and bleeding lungs, emaciation, and other ailments which if neglected or unskillfully treated find a fatal termina tion in consumption. In 1898 one of my daughters was suffering on account of a severe cough, hectic fever, wasting of flesh and other ayniptoins of diseased lungs," writes Rev. Joseph H. KespeTman, of Barium Springs, Iredell Co., N. C. "I promptly gave her Dr. R. V. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery with gratifying success, and she now enjoa eicellent health. This being true, I hereby heartily endorse your medicines." Accept no substitute for "Golden Med ical Discovery." There is nothing " just as good " for diseases of the stomach, Wocd end lungs.
