The people of Dallas are re
sponding nobly to the appeal for
help from flood-stricken Heppner.
Over $100 was raised in less than
two hours, Wednesday, and this
ii mount was immediately wired to
Mayor Gilliam. The awful tale of
horror touches all hearts, and
everyone seems anxious to give
something to aid the sufferers. It
is impossible for the committee to
cull upon all who desire to con
tribute, much as its members would
like to do eo, and for this reason
llio Observer will receive any and
nil contributions offered. The
money will be promptly forwarded
to the Mayor of Heppner to be dis
liibuted among those in need of
help. It is important that all con
tributions be sent or handed in at
once. There are many people in
humble circumstances who cannot
afford to give other than small
Funis, and yet who are deeply
noxious to contribute to alleviate
the great distress. This is a case
v. here the size of the contribution
do-s not count, as above all con
sideration of amount is the spirit
that prompts the offering. The
smallest donation will be as wel
come as the largest. The brave,
open-hearted people of Eastern

money, men and supplies is pour
ing in from Portland, Seattle,
Tacoma, Spokane, Boise City,
Walla Walla, and other leading
cities of the Northwest, and the
smaller cities and towns will not
be Blow in following the lead of the
larger ones. Everybody is anxious
to help. The disaster strikes close
home, and the sympathies of the
people are touched as never before.
An appalling calamity like this
serves to bring out the fact that
the heart of unselfishness and
brotherly love still beats strong in
the bosom of the American people.

Richaid Tatom, of Portland, visited
relatives in Dallas this week.
Dr. R. E. Lee Steiner and family,
after visiting in Salem and vicinity
for some weeks, have returned to
Lakeview, where Dr. Steiner has a
large practice. His Salem friends had
hoped that Dr. Steiner might remain
here, but he is wedded to his new
home in the land of fat cattle and
sheep, especially as the people out
there have been pood to him and have
given him a very lucrative practice.
Statesman.
Eugene Cattron has been elected
Mayor of Wasco by a handsome
majority over C. J. Bright candidate
for Supreme Judge, at the last state
election. Mr. Cattron is a native son,
was born at Monmouth 37 years ago,
where he received his education at
Christian College. He is also a gradu
ate of the State Normal School. He is
now serving his third term as Mayor
of Wasco aud in a measure the city's
splendid financial showing is due to
his honest outspoken and well-balanced
executive abilities. Politically Mr.
Cattron is a stanch Republican; in
bnsiuess he is the local representative
of the Pacific Coast Elevator Company.

BRIGHT'S DISEASE.
The largest sum ever paid for a pre
scription, changed hands in San Fran
cisco, August 30. 1901. The transfer in
volved in coin and stock $112,500.00 and
was paid by a party of business men for
a specific for Bright's Disease and Dia
betes, hitherto incurable diseases.
They commenced the serious investi
gation of the epecinc Nov. 15, 1900.
They interviewed scores of the cured
and tried it out on its merits by putting
over three dozen cases on the treatment
and watching them. They also got phy
sicians to name chronic, incurable cases,
and administered it with the physicians
for judges. Up to Aug. 25, eighty-seyen
per cent of the test cases were either
well or progressing favorably.
There being but thirteen per cent of i
failures, the parties were satisfied and '
closed the transaction. The proceedings j
of the investigating committee and the
clinical reports of the test cases were i
published and will be mailed free on ap- !
