Dan A. Poling; Takes First Place in
Intercollegiate Oratorical
Contest.
Weakened from the ellects or a
severe illness and scarcely able to take
his place on the platform, Dan A.
Poling, tho talented son of President
C. C. Poling, and a popular student of
Dallas Collego, won out over all com
petitors and was awarded first place

late oratorical contest held at tho M,
E. Church in this city Friday evening.
Hie paper wa3 a literary gem, and
was delivered in such a manner as to
hold his hearers spellbound. Ho will
represent Oreaon in tho inter-state
contest at Corvallis, May 22, and his
friends are conildent that ho will hold
his own with tho Washington and
California men in good shapo, as he
is rapidly recovering ins strongtn anu
voice. l'ho subject of his oration is
"My Nation's Destiny."

Mrs. M. Bonuno, who has been visit
ing her daughter, Mrs. W. E. Laeoy,

BRIGHT'S DISEASE.
The largest sum ever paid for a pre
scription, chanced hando in San Fran
cisco, August SO, 1901. The transfer in
volved in coin and stock f 112,600.00 una
was paid by a party of business men for
a Fpeuifie for lirighl's Disease and Dia
betes, hitherto incurable diseases.
They commenced the serious investi
gation of the specific Nov. 15, 1900.
They interviewed scores of the cured
and tried it out on its merits by putting
over three dozen cases on th treatment
and watching them. They also got phy
sicians to name chronic, incurable eases,
and administered it with the physicians
for judges. Up to Ang. 25. eighty-seven
per cent of the test cases were either
well or progressing favorably.
There being but thirteen per cent of
failures, the parties were satisfied and
closed the transaction. The proceedings
of the investigating committee and the
clinical reports of the test cases were
published and w ill be mailed free on ap

The square East of the Courthouse is reserved for the big tent of the
Arnold Shows. North of the Courthouse is the Ferris Wheel and the
Merry-Go-Round. The small squares, numbered from 1 to 15 inclusive,
are tracts reserved for booths. Bids for these consessions must reach the
Secretary, W. G. Vassall, before May 16. The highest bidder will be
given choice oflocation. The bids must read so mucn per aieni. xo
booths will be allowed on the East side of the square, as this space will
