The March number of the Oregon
Teachers' Monthly contains a half
tone portrait and biographical
sketch of each member of the Ore
gon Legislature. This journal is
steadily growing better as it grows
older. It was established in 1897,
and is published in Salem. Its
growth for several years was very
slow, owing to "the fact that so
many school journals had failed
after a shortexistence. But during
the last two yeats the growth has
been rapid, until now the journal
numbers on its subscription list
2,000 of the most progressive
teachers in the state. Considering
the fact that there are not many
more than three thousand teachers
in Oregon, this is a good record.
There ought to be a fine array of
county exhibits at the Oregon State
Fair this "year. The State Fair
Board offers $1,300 in premiums
for county exhibits, divided as
follows: $300 to the first, $250 to
second, $200 to third, $150 to
fourth, and $100 each to the four
next in merit. The county court
of Marion county has appropriated
$200 towards the expense of pre
paring an exhibit from that county.
The state com mission for the Lewis
and Clark Exposition may duplicate
the awards offered by the fair board
on condition that so much of the
exhibits as it desires b turned over
to it for exhibition at the St. Louis
Exposition. Rural Northwest.

ELECTION AT FALLS CITY
Close Contest Between License and
Anti-License Elements.
The election at Falls City on
Monday was closely contested, and
resulted in a victory for the element
in favor of licensing saloons. The
fight was a very close one, how
ever, and in many instances the
difference in the votes of opposing
candidates did not amount to more
than one or two either way. The
Prohibitionists elected the Mayor,
W. H. Milligan, and one Council
man, Joseph Trueax, and the
Citizens' party captured the re
mainder of the ticket. Onehundred
and ten votes were cast.
The officers elected are: Mayor,
W. H. Milligan; councilman-at-large,
S. H. Tetherow; auditor,
A.N. Robinson; marshal, Warren
Wright; councilmen, George Gard
ner, A. J. Syron, Zim Hinshaw
and Joseph Trueax.

"I can cheerfully recommend Dr. Miles'
Anti-Pun Pills as first-class in every respect
They have done wonders for roe. I was a
soldier in the late war and am subject to and
have my share of the aches and pains from
the hardship that usually falls to the lot of
the soldiers who saw service. Anti-Pain Pills
never fail to relieve the rheumatic twinges,
headache or other pains. A number of old
comrades m this vicinity who have used Dr.
Miles' Restorative Tonic, Nervine and Nerve
and Liver Pills speak highly of their virtues
in every respect. My health is greatly im
proved, thanks to your Restorative Nervine,
with the exception of an old wound which
troubles me somewhat-" Timothy J.
Lynch, 4th Regt. Maryland Vol. Inft, The
Dalles, Oregon.
Rheumatic twinges, headache, and the
pains of a disordered stomach are frequent
reminders of the strain and hardships of an.
army campaign. In all such cases the nerves
are affected too seriously to right themselves,
and prompt treatment is necessary. The best
treatment consists of Dr. Miles' Restorative
Nervine, which restores vitality to the nerves
and helps them to throw off various dis rders
which bring aboa pain and suffering. There
is nothing so gwd tor the stomach and bow
els as Dr. Miles' Nerve and Liver Pills. Tbey
let directly upon the nerves of the digestive
trains, speedily restoring them to normal
activity.

DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve has

The John Burroughs Society of
Portland has, through the generosity
of Mrs, Rosa F. Burrell, of that
city, two cash prizes to award for
knowledge of the native birds of
Oregon. These prizes are given
yearly to the classes of the highest
grade in the elementary schools of
the state.
The first prize is $12.00, the
second $8.00, to be awarded to
those who can name the most birds
by sight and song, and who write a
sufficiently excellent composition
on the subject. The relative mark
ings for the two examinations will
be, upon a scale of 100, 60 per cent
for the field test and 40 per cent for
the composition test. That is,
actual knowledge of the birds will
count for more than excellence in
composition.
The competition is open to the
class graduating in February as
well as to the class graduating in
June. The compositions must be
in the hands of the corresponding
secretary of the John Burroughs
Society, 634 Williams avenue, Port
land, Oregon, not later than June 1.
Any subject based upon personal
observation of our native birds will
be acceptable. One particular bird
may be selected for study; or some
subject as the following may be
chosen: "Nests of Oregon Birds,"
"Feeding Habits of Our Native
Birds," "Bird Friends of the
Farmer," etc. In all observations
time and place should be carefully
recorded.
The field examinations will be
given the last week in May and the
first week ih June. All who send
compositions will be considered ap
plicants for a field examination,
and the address of each writer
should be enclosed with the com
position.

Mrs. Lorena Jane Weaver, of 88

to the whereabouts of her brother,

If still living, he was 48 years old
last September; has light com

thought that he may possibly be

High Pressure Days.
Men and women alike have to
work incessantly with brain and
hand to hold their own nowadays.
Never were the demands of business,
the wants of the family, the re
quirements of society, more numer
ous. The first effect of the praise
worthy effort to keep up with all
these things is commonly 6een in a
weakened or debilitated condition
of the nervous system, which re

extreme cases in complete nervous
prostration. It is clearly seen that
what ia needed is what will sustain
the system, give vigor and tone to
the nerves, and keep the digestive

and active. From personal knowl

acts on all the vital organs, builds
up the whole system, and fits men

stomach disorders. Mrs. Mary S.

"I have been a dyspeptic for years

use of Kodol I began to improve at

The Benefit of Change.
We are like house plants: We
need a change of soil now and then
to be replanted. New scenes,
new experiences, new surroundings,
a change of climate, dry air instead
of moisture, sunshine in , place of
cloud. This is sometimes essential
to health. There arc conditions
near at hand that are better than
Europe can offer. Take a month
or two in California. Plant your
self for a time where there are no
irritations, where the hotel is be
yond criticism, the landscape pleas
ing, and where warm sunny
weather invites to walks and drivtJ.
Pure and dry air, and the increased
electric influences of sunshine are
vastly helpful.
You can make this trip at very
little expense, and enjoy a ride
over the scenic Siskiyou and Shasta
mountains, which, at this time of
the year with their snow-covered
peaks, are unsurpassed for their
grandeur.
