Governor Chamberlain has ap
pointed D. W. Sears, of Inde
pendence, a delegate to the National
and International Good Roads
Convention, which 'meets'" in St.
Louis, Mo., April 27.
The orga nization of the Willamette
Valley Baseball League will be
effected next Saturday, April 11,
when representatives of the different
teams will meet in Eugene for that
purpose. The teams to be repre
sented in the league are Albany,
Eugene, Roseburg and McMinn
ville. Plans for the organization
of the league are almost complete.
Both Albany and Eugene have
already begun arrangements for
putting teams in the field and Mc
Minnville and Roseburg have signi
fied their willingness to enter this
league.
The March number of the Oregon
Teachers' Monthly contains a half
tone portrait and biographical
sketch of each member of the Ore
gon Legislature. This journal is
steadily growing better as it grows
older. It was established in 1897,
and is published in Salem. Its
growth for several years was very
slow, owing to "the fact that so
many school journals had failed
after a shortexistence. But during
the last two yeats the growth has
been rapid, until now the journal
numbers on its subscription list
2,000 of the most progressive
teachers in the state. Considering
the fact that there are not many
more than three thousand teachers
in Oregon, this is a good record.
There ought to be a fine array of
county exhibits at the Oregon State
Fair this "year. The State Fair
Board offers $1,300 in premiums
for county exhibits, divided as
follows: $300 to the first, $250 to
second, $200 to third, $150 to
fourth, and $100 each to the four
next in merit. The county court
of Marion county has appropriated
$200 towards the expense of pre
paring an exhibit from that county.
The state com mission for the Lewis
and Clark Exposition may duplicate
the awards offered by the fair board
on condition that so much of the
exhibits as it desires b turned over
to it for exhibition at the St. Louis
Exposition. Rural Northwest.

ELECTION AT FALLS CITY
Close Contest Between License and
Anti-License Elements.
The election at Falls City on
Monday was closely contested, and
resulted in a victory for the element
in favor of licensing saloons. The
fight was a very close one, how
ever, and in many instances the
difference in the votes of opposing
candidates did not amount to more
than one or two either way. The
Prohibitionists elected the Mayor,
W. H. Milligan, and one Council
man, Joseph Trueax, and the
Citizens' party captured the re
mainder of the ticket. Onehundred
and ten votes were cast.
The officers elected are: Mayor,
W. H. Milligan; councilman-at-large,
S. H. Tetherow; auditor,
A.N. Robinson; marshal, Warren
Wright; councilmen, George Gard
ner, A. J. Syron, Zim Hinshaw
and Joseph Trueax.

County Sunday School Convention,
to be held in Independence, and we
earnestly desire you to take part
by becoming interested and interest
your Sunday School in thin con

officers and teachers or their sub
stitutes of each srhool in the County,
by sending your contribution, a
small sum, only three cents for
each scholar, and last but most
important, pray that it may be the
very best meeting ever held in Polk
County. We have a good program
prepared, which will appear next
week. Let us, as Christians, be
earnest in this matter, that we may
raise our schools to where God's
work belongs. Do not throw this
aside and forget it, but come every
one, and you will help us, and we
hope to do you good. You can

The John Burroughs Society of
Portland has, through the generosity
of Mrs, Rosa F. Burrell, of that
city, two cash prizes to award for
knowledge of the native birds of
Oregon. These prizes are given
yearly to the classes of the highest
grade in the elementary schools of
the state.
The first prize is $12.00, the
second $8.00, to be awarded to
those who can name the most birds
by sight and song, and who write a
sufficiently excellent composition
on the subject. The relative mark
ings for the two examinations will
be, upon a scale of 100, 60 per cent
for the field test and 40 per cent for
the composition test. That is,
actual knowledge of the birds will
count for more than excellence in
composition.
The competition is open to the
class graduating in February as
well as to the class graduating in
June. The compositions must be
in the hands of the corresponding
secretary of the John Burroughs
Society, 634 Williams avenue, Port
land, Oregon, not later than June 1.
Any subject based upon personal
observation of our native birds will
be acceptable. One particular bird
may be selected for study; or some
subject as the following may be
chosen: "Nests of Oregon Birds,"
"Feeding Habits of Our Native
Birds," "Bird Friends of the
Farmer," etc. In all observations
time and place should be carefully
recorded.
The field examinations will be
given the last week in May and the
first week ih June. All who send
compositions will be considered ap
plicants for a field examination,
and the address of each writer
should be enclosed with the com
position.

Mrs. Lorena Jane Weaver, of 88
Briggs Avenue, Buffalo, New York,
seeks for information that will lead
to the whereabouts of her brother,
Martin Leroy Fries, who left his
home for the West twenty-three
years ago. When last heard from
he was employed in a lead smelter
in Erie, Weld county, Colorado.
If still living, he was 48 years old
last September; has light com
plexion, very light blue eyes, and
is 5 feet, 7 or 8 inches tall. It is
thought that he may possibly be
working in some mine in Western
Oregon.
Declamation Contest of Dallas Public
School.
On next Wednesday, Thursday
and Friday evenings at 7:30o'clock
in the City Hall the Dallas Public
School will hold a contest for
medals and other prizes.
There will bo four contestants
from each room, and two prizes
will be given to each room. The
winners of the first prize will then
contest on Friday night for the
medals.
' There will be music and songs
between the declamations. Ad
mission for Wednesday and Thurs
day night, 10 cents; Friday night,
15 cents. After paying the ex
penses, the remainder will be spent
for books for the Public School
Library. All are cordially invited
to attend.
