Polk County News Polk County Itemizer-Observer • January 17, 2018 5A Titus: Deputies repaint rooms Meters Continued from Page 1A Deputies donning a dif- ferent kind of workwear — those that aren’t hurt by a lit- tle paint — Saturday were happy to volunteer their time on behalf of Titus 3 clients and what they seek to achieve. “Most people see us on a different scale, out there try- ing to police and catch peo- ple doing things wrong, al- ways watching them. But we are also here to be out of uni- form and help the commu- nity,” Jones said. “Most of us are doing this job because we want to help our commu- nities, whether we are in uni- form or not.” He said it’s nice to be able to share an uplifting story with his children about what he did that day. “Your kids ask you what you did today, ‘Did you bust the bad guys?’” Jones said. “Today, we get to say, ‘You know what we did? We helped some people who were in jail have a nice place to live and get back on their feet.’” Johnson said Titus 3 clients, who are homeless after their release, can stay at the house for up to a year. The goal is to restore the lives and families of the women selected to join the home. “We work with our com- munity partners to get them JOLENE GUZMAN/ Itemizer-Observer Deputy Jonathon Jones touches up the paint job in one of the bedrooms at Titus 3 House in Dallas on Saturday. We get them working or in school,” John- son said. “I don’t want to say that we get them their chil- dren back because they get their kids back, but we give them the opportunity for their children to come here to Titus.” Johnson said when she made the call to Garton to request help, she wasn’t ex- pecting so many deputies to show up. “I’m overwhelmed at the generosity of the sheriff’s de- partment,” she said. Johnson said Garton pur- chased more paint brushes for the job when her budget didn’t allow her to buy more. Johnson hopes she isn’t the only person who notices how a group of Polk County’s deputies spend a Saturday off. She said her clients need to know that the community is supportive of them. “We have to put their minds at ease, that this is a home, and you’re accepted. We want you here,” Johnson said. Continued from Page 1A “Not that you’re going to stop doing laundry, but it’s the information that you get that you might be able to — all appliances have ratings on them,” Gauntt said. “You can say, ‘Gee, that’s a 20-year-old washing machine there, what’s a newer one going to cost?’” In general, people replace old appliances when they break down, Gauntt said. The information gath- ered by the new smart me- ters will give customers the ability to budget for a new appliance for the sake of saving energy. Other ways customers can use the information to save on electric bills is by experimenting with short- er showers, or hanging blankets on windows dur- ing cold spells, Gauntt said. The information is not in real time, but it’s quick- er than waiting until re- ceiving the power bill at the end of the month, he said. Once the installation in Independence is complete, smart meters will roll out to Dallas, Rickreall and West Salem. Gauntt said the project should be complete in Polk County by mid-February.
