He was employed as a driver from forklifts to log trucks. He enjoyed driving. He built several hot rods, but his health forced him to give that up. He loved music, going to concerts and played guitar. He is survived by his sister Karen Purdom, of Salem. He was the son of O.D. and Fay Purdom, who preceded him in death. A celebration of Life and the Legend will be Nov. 25 at the VFW hall in Willamina at 12:30 p.m. A potluck will follow the service and open mic be- cause everyone has a story. His sister Karen said, “Dave wanted to thank everyone for being his friend and said, ‘if I sat down to write thank yous there wouldn't be enough paper.’” Twyla Mae Borrall Dec. 26, 1923 – Nov. 14, 2017 Born Dec. 26, 1923, in La Junta, Colo. Promoted to Heaven on Nov. 14, 2017, in Monmouth, in the presence of her family. She was a faithful Christ follower, a wonderful moth- er, an awe- s o m e grand- m o t h e r, precious sister and aunt and a friend to countless people. Twyla is survived by her daughter Diana Wright (son- in-love Mike); her son Rod Proaps (daughter-in-love Lyn); three grandchildren, Nelson Wright, Chad Proaps and Stacy Shradar; and her bonus grandchildren, grandchildren-in-law and several step-grandchildren that she loved dearly. She had seven great-grandchil- dren, Byron, Madison, Alec, Macy, Iona, Ewen, and Adia, and one great-great-grand- child Eden, and one on the way, Greyson. She is also survived by her sisters Dor- thy Bargar and Zella Gundy; and one brother David Jus- tus. She had many precious nieces and nephews, and she loved it when they called her Aunt Twyla. Twyla was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Thomas Justus and Ruth Justus. Also preceded in death by her husband Ray Borrall; and former husband Harold Proaps; her sister Bonnie Cude; her brother Kenneth Justus; and her great-grandson Keenen Dunn. She claimed her entire ex- tended family for Christ by his precious blood. Twyla faithfully attended church her entire life. She was a member of Praise As- s e m b l y i n Mo n m o u t h , where she was known as “Muthie.” She was a Rosie the Rivet- er during World War II, working in Portland in the shipyards. She was a lifetime Dudley’s Hearing Aid Service homemaker. She was a tremendous Bible teacher of children and adults for many years. She tithed faith- fully, and God supplied her needs with abundance. We are happy Twyla is in heaven singing and dancing and enjoying her restored sight and perfect hearing. We know that the gates of heaven opened wide the early morning hours of Nov. 14, 2017, when it was an- nounced that a treasured saint was arriving. Neverthe- less, we mourn the passing of this remarkable woman and we will miss her terribly. Services were held at Praise Assembly on Nov. 20, 2017. Hodges Nov. 12, 1931 – Nov. 14, 2017 Ja m e s Me l v i n ( Ji m ) Hodges, of Chandler, Ariz., passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, of age-related causes. He was 86 years old. Jim was born on Nov. 12, 1931, in Crescent City, Calif., to Nellie Helen (Stewart) Hodges and Daniel I v a n Hodges. He was a U.S. Army vet- eran, who graduated from Ore- gon State University (BS) and Texas A&M University (MS). Following college, Jim worked nearly 40 years with the Eugene School District 4J in Oregon, where his pas- sion for education was evi- dent. The majority of his career was spent as a teacher and guidance counselor at North Eugene and South Eugene high schools, and he also taught adult education classes at Lane Community College. After he retired, Jim spent countless hours traveling to visit with family and friends, and volunteering at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene and at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona. Jim was predeceased by his parents; his beloved for- mer wife Nancy (Shinkle) Hodges; and his nephew Robert Fetter. He is survived by his daughter Pamela Hodges Kulinna, of Chandler, her former husband F. Eric Kulinna, and their son F. Parker Kulinna; as well as his sister Maxine (Hodges) Fet- ter, of Portland, her husband Bill Fetter and their family, which includes niece Diane (Fetter) Priewe, of Philo- math, her husband Rob Priewe, and their children Alison Priewe, Alison’s fiancé Steven Hook, Ross Priewe, and Reid Priewe, and niece Mika (Suzuki) Fetter, of Port- land, and her children Kai and Nanami Fetter. Calvin Ricky VanWinkle Feb. 5, 1954 – Nov. 13, 2017 Calvin Ricky VanWinkle, 63, a resident of Rickreall, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Feb. 5, 1954, in Dallas, the son of Calvin A. and Made- line Hagar. Shortly after grad- u a t i o n from high school, he enlisted in the United S t a t e s Army and, because of medical health, was discharged following basic training. He lived in Dallas for all of his life, except for a few years he spent in Oklahoma. He worked for the Gem Equipment Company in Mt. Angel as a welder and fabri- cator producing cannery equipment. He built the first curly fries machine and had many inventive ideas throughout his life. He was a member of the Gra c e Ba p t i s t C h u rc h . Calvin enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an extreme outdoor man. He was a fun- loving, dedicated family man, full of faith and strong to the end. He is survived by his wife Becky Drake; daughter Laura Blevins; son Matthew VanWinkle; and daughter Sara Swindle; along with 12 grandchildren. Also surviv- ing is a sister Pat Waldron. Dixon Charles Phillips Dec. 1, 1932 – Nov. 14, 2017 Dixon Charles Phillips, of Dallas, died Nov. 14, 2017, at the age of 84. He was born in Seattle on Dec. 1, 1932, to Marion and Ethel (Little) Phillips. In 1951, D i x o n joined the Air Force and at- tended the University of Ala- bama where he studied to be a stenographer for the U.S. military and earned the National Defense Service Medal while he was enlisted. After his discharge Dixon moved to Long Beach, Calif., and began working for Southern California Edison Co. as a serviceman and util- ities engineer, where he worked for over 30 years. He retired in 1990. He met his beautiful and loving wife-to-be Beverly Heine- mann and, in 1971, they married in Las Vegas, Nev. After Dixon retired, he and Beverly moved to Rose- burg to be closer to the youngest of four step-chil- dren. He enjoyed many hobbies in life, but his favorite was reading, watching and studying weather (meteorol- ogy), but he also enjoyed doing projects on the com- puter, gardening, bowling, water skiing and enjoying their dogs. Dixon is survived by his wife of 46 years, Beverly Phillips; four step-children, Jean Drumm, Joan Heine- mann, Jerome Heinemann and Joanne Alcorns; five grandchildren, Alvina, Ryan, Neil, Michelle and Sue Ann; and several great grandchil- dren. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. on Mon- day, Nov. 20, 2017, at the Roseburg National Ceme- tery in Roseburg, with full military honors. Jerry Walter Kluver Aug. 9, 1954 – Oct. 28, 2017 Jerry Walter Kluver died at age 63, Oct. 28, 2017. He passed away peaceful- ly, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his mother Belle Klu- ver; broth- er Dan Kluver; sis- ters Teresa Kluver and Lois Sum- m e r s ; daughters Tammy Ghiai and Kara Estep; granddaughter Kailie; and partner, Peggy Smith. Jerry was a devoted father and a kind, gentle man who loved animals and would feed many of them by hand, wild or not. Thus he was dubbed “Jerry Dolittle.” He was a happy person who joked and teased with everyone he met. He loved to bake and often delivered goodies to the museum staff across the street. He held a strong belief in God, and was often moved to tears during worship. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Charles Dean Braziel Feb. 23, 1938 – Nov. 16, 2017 Charles “Chuck” Braziel passed away on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, at the age of 79, in Albany, with his family by his side. Chuck fought a strong bat- tle against five differ- ent can- cers during an eight- year peri- od, suc- cumbing to liver cancer. Chuck was born in the township of Bear, Ark., on Feb. 23, 1938, to Arthur and Ruth Braziel, the fifth of six children. At the age of 7, he moved with his family to the Willamette Valley, settling in the Monmouth-Indepen- dence area. He was a resi- dent of Monmouth for many years until recently moving to Albany to live with is daughter and family. Chuck enjoyed his final months before passing spending quality time and re c o n n e c t i n g w i t h h i s daughter, granddaughters, brothers and nieces. His great joy was spending time and playing with his new great-granddaughter, Char- lotte. Chuck graduated from Central High School in 1955, briefly attended Oregon In- stitute of Technology in Kla- math Falls before joining the National Guard Reserves, stationed in Rucker, Ala. Chuck married Patty Dry- dale on March 15, 1963. They had one daughter, Matie. Chuck married a sec- ond time, and married Marlyn Russell on Dec. 26, 1986. They later separated in 2017. Throughout his lifetime, Chuck was employed by Georgia Pacific, the city of Independence, and Akzo Nobel, from which he re- tired in 2000. Chuck is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ruth; sister Velda; and brothers Jim and Norvell. Chuck is survived by his daughter, Matie Dougherty (Vaughn), of Albany; grand- daughter Christine Kennedy (Tyler), of Albany, grand- daughter Haleigh Gilchrist (Austin), of Albany; and great-granddaughter Char- lotte Gilchrist, of Albany. He is survived by his brothers Stanley Braziel, of Salem, and Bobby Braziel (Sally), of Dallas.
