DALLAS — It’s not every
day that someone opens a
new business and finds that
they have more time to
spend with family and
friends.
That’s how it’s worked so
far for Joe and Kristine
Olsen, the owners of Con-
signment Monster, located
on East Ellendale in Dallas.
The store opened on Aug.
31, and features gently used
second-hand clothing, fur-
niture, housewares, a col-
lection of DVDs, and work
of local artisans.
“I’ve been doing this kind
of thing for a while,” Kris-
tine said. “My husband
travels for work and we
wanted something that we
could do as a family.”
“So, I could be home and
watch my kids grow up and
not just hear about it,” Joe
chimed in.
Their skills complement
each other, Kristine said.
She has experience in re-
tail, while Joe has a busi-
ness management back-
ground.
“There’s not a lot of over-
lap between our areas of ex-
pertise,” Joe said. “So, that
probably helps a lot. We are
not stepping on each other
toes.”
The store specializes in
name-brand clothing and
quality household goods. If
What: Consignment Monster.
Where: 488 E. Ellendale Ave. Dallas.
When: Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.;
and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Consignment: The store takes items the first day of the
month through the 20th with a limit of 25 items per cus-
tomer, per day.

mentMonster/ or call 503-746-3280.
you are looking for some-
thing unique, the Olsens
said they have been
amazed at what consignors
bring into sell.
Kristine said their first
consignor brought in a
strange-looking wooden
scoop with finger-like
prongs sticking out of the
end. They didn’t know what
it was until a customer
picked it up and said, “Oh
look, they have a cranberry
scoop.”
“It’s for harvesting cran-
berries,” Kristine said. “It’s
kind of an education, what
comes in.”
Joe said they’ve had peo-
ple drop off kerosene lamps
that look like they came
straight out of an old farm-
house.
“I think it’s fun seeing
what comes in. Really
unique stuff and it’s differ-
ent every day,” Joe said.
In addition, you can
f i n d n e w Tu p p e r w a re
from a retired dealer sell-
ing out of stock and hand-
made baby gifts — which
the artist folds into cake
and cupcake shapes. Cus-
tom magnates, restored
furniture, and a photogra-
pher who makes cards
and framed photos, all
sell their wares at Con-
signment Monster.
While they only been
open a couple of months,
the couple feel like
they’ve made friends out
of their consignors and
customers.
“The response from the
community has really been
amazing,” Kristine said.
DALLAS — Polk County
Public Health officials con-
firmed a case pertussis or
whooping cough was at Dal-
las High School on Thursday.
The school sent letters to
parents Thursday afternoon
notifying families about the
case of the contagious ill-
ness.
“Pertussis is a highly con-
tagious and very serious
bacterial infection. Pertussis
bacteria live in the nose,
mouth and throat and are
spread by coughing and
sneezing,” the letter read.
“Pertussis often starts with
mild cough and or cold-like
symptoms which develop
into a severe cough that can
cause gagging and some-
times vomiting.”
Kirk Hillebrand, the com-
municable disease nurse at
Polk County Public Health,
said as of Monday afternoon
no other cases have been
confirmed.
He said the bacterial in-
fection is deceptive, at first.
“It starts off as a cough or
the sniffles, then that cough
gets worse,” Hillebrand
said.
Whooping cough is highly
contagious during the onset,
about a week.
People can spread the in-
fection during the time be-
fore they know they have
whooping cough, so it’s im-
portant that people exposed
to the disease see a doctor if
they have any type of respi-
ratory illness, Hillebrand
said.
He said people should
keep track of any symptoms
for three weeks after expo-
sure.
Vaccination — while not
100 percent effective — is
the best method of prevent-
ing the illness or lessening
the severity of it, Hillebrand
said.
He added it’s especially
important to have young
children vaccinated, as well
as caretakers and family
members.
“It can definitely prevent
s o m e o n e f ro m g e t t i n g
whooping cough,” he said.
“It’s about 86 percent ef-
fective. Sometimes people
get pertussis, but it’s a very
attenuated version of the
illness. The cough isn’t as
bad. There’s definitely
some value even though
not 100 percent effective.”
Other recommendations
include:
• Receive early testing for
coughs lasting more than a
week.
• Check if immunizations
are up to date.
• Cover your cough and
wash your hands.
If you have questions
about pertussis, contact:
• Polk County Public
Health – 503-623-8175.
• Dallas School District
nurse – 503-623-3611.
• Your doctor.
