Noah Sickles sprints to the end zone during the Mountaineers’ 58-0 win on Friday.
FALLS CITY — At first
glance, a 58-0 victory would
be cause for total celebra-
tion.
Falls City football coach
Laric Cook was not as festive
as one may expect.
The Mountaineers rolled
to a victory over Siletz Valley
on Friday, but penalties
plagued Falls City — espe-
cially early on.
From offsides and false
starts to personal fouls, the
Mountaineers were their
own worst enemy.
“T hey
were anx-
ious to
p l a y, b u t
they have
to be dis-
ciplined,”
Cook said.
“ I t just

we’re not where we need to
be at yet. We can’t afford to
do that against good
teams. It’s frustrating on
our end.”
Penalties were about the
only thing Falls City strug-
gled with.

PREP VOLLEYBALL
Pirates off to strong start
Perrydale’s 13-match win streak snapped on Saturday
By Lukas Eggen
The Itemizer-Observer
PERRYDALE — Perrydale
volleyball coach Denise
Dickey wasn’t sure how the
early part of the Pirates’ sea-
son would play out.
“Last year we were very
young, and I wasn’t sure
where we would start,” Dick-
ey said.
It’s safe to say Dickey is
pleased with the team so far.
Perrydale improved to 14-
2 overall after a 25-13, 25-10,
25-17 victory over
Willamette Valley Christian
on Sept. 12 — the team’s
13th win a row.
“I think we’re right where
we should be, though I’d like
to be a little further ahead of-
fensively,” Dickey said. “Our
defense, I think, is pretty
strong. Isley (Burns) has
been stepping up. Alyssa
(Lux) has as well, but I’d like
to get five consistent hitters
on offense.”
The Pirates’ victory over
WVC was never in doubt, but
Dickey said the team must
play with more urgency.
With seven varsity play-
ers, simulating match situ-
ations is difficult in prac-
tice, making matches
against less challenging op-
ponents key to player de-
velopment.
“They’ve got to start uti-
lizing these situations a little
bit better than they did
today,” Dickey said. “I think
they kind of stepped back
on their heels a little bit. We
know we have to play hard
all the time.”

PREP BOYS SOCCER
Rebuild a slow burn for Dragons
By Lukas Eggen
The Itemizer-Observer
DALLAS — Building Dal-
las’ boys soccer program
into a contender is a work in
progress.
The Dragons show their
potential, but the key is find-
ing a way to extrapolate that
over a full match.
“We’re still up and down,”
coach John Jones said. “We
have moments where we’re
playing together, then we fall
apart.”
D allas

to
Southridge, a 6A school, 9-
0 on Thursday, but the loss
did little to dampen play-
ers’ optimism.
“This is one of the best
groups of guys we’ve had,
not only on the field, but
off the field as friends,”
senior Danny Walker said.
“Half the game is skill; the
other half is camaraderie. If
you can’t get along with the
other players, you can’t
have
a
g o o d
team.”

Turning that talent into a
cohesive unit is the next step
in the process and one that
they are slowly working to.
