Kite: Boy will take
it fishing with him
Twigs to trees
Continued from Page 1A
Try as he might to reverse course, the kite got tangled in
the branches.
Lachlan’s attempts to climb the tree were unsuccessful
and it appeared the kite was lost forever.
“We thought it was gone for good,” Tracy said. “I felt
bad about the eyesore it was going to cause the neighbor-
hood.”
Tracy decided to message Monmouth Independence
Networks on Facebook to see if anyone could come re-
trieve the kite.
“I didn’t want to call them because I didn’t think it was
worth it to tie up their phone lines,” Tracy said.
Minet responded by saying someone would be there
within an hour.
About 10 minutes later, Ruban Ulloa arrived.
“I got a call from my supervisor to tell me to go and get
a kite out of a tree,” Ulloa said. “I asked him how do we
know where it was? (He said) a customer Facebooked us
that their kid got his kite stuck in a tree. So I went to the
address that he gave me and got there, and the kids came
outside and (were) so happy I got there. I got set up and
went up in my bucket truck and got the kite out of the
tree. The kid was so happy they took a picture with me.
That was a good day for me, too.”
Lachlan hasn’t stopped flying his kite since — though
he now takes his kite in the opposite direction of the tree.
He has big plans for his kite — including taking it with
him when he goes fishing.
“Kites bring you back to childhood,” Tracy said. “That’s
the part I love about it. We also learned we have a pretty
amazing community that’s willing to come out and help.”

Volunteers spent the blustery, rainy morning hours of Earth Day planting shrubs and willow and dogwood tree
cuttings at the Luckiamute State Natural Area. A group of about 25 to 30 volunteers gathered Saturday on the
part of the LSNA near a farm field to plant trees to cut down on weed growth near the field. The event is part of an
ongoing restoration effort on the 925-acre area off Buena Vista Road in Polk County.
