Polk County Living Polk County Itemizer-Observer • March 8, 2017 9A MI TOWN Consider yourself warned — a few days in advance, however — but whether you love it, hate it, or just plain tolerate it, daylight saving time will be upon us this coming weekend. Please re- member to set your clocks, especially the alarm that wakes you up for church and work, one hour ahead on Saturday night before you go to bed. We’ll all be wander- ing around confused and discombobulated for a cou- ple of days, but the rewards will bring us longer evenings and hope that summer is in- deed on the way. — Celebrate all good things about MI Town this Friday at Eola Hills Wine Cellars in Rickreall, at the 52nd Annu- al Community Awards Ban- quet presented by the M-I Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center. Our local individuals, businesses and P ATTY T AYLOR D UTCHER Columnist organizations will be hon- ored. Tickets are $40 and in- clude dinner and ticket for one drink. Register online at micc.org. — The economy appears to be improving, with more “help wanted” signs begin- ning to appear around MI Town and other areas in Polk and Marion counties, and that’s welcome news for everyone. CSC (the Community Services Con- sortium) has free services for young adults ages 16-24 on Monday through Thurs- day afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Central School District Office, Room 10. Available services include preparation to take the GED test online at no cost, re- sume writing, reference as- sistance and job hunting and career planning infor- mation and ideas. Please call 541-704-7819 or 541- 704-7820 for more informa- tion and assistance. — The Friends of the Inde- pendence Library’s annual fundraising movie is sched- uled for Monday at 7 p.m. at the Independence Cinema. Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne star in this wonder- ful vintage film, “The Quiet Man.” It’s a movie filled with fun and laughter that every- one can enjoy. Tickets cost $15 and are available at the Independence library. The Friends of the Independ- ence Library help our com- munities by purchasing so many items that are not in- cluded in the regular library budget. There will be draw- ings and popcorn and other goodies provided to all tick- et holders. See you there. — And while we’re talking about libraries — both the Independence and Mon- mouth libraries have free passes available for patrons to visit the A.C. Gilbert House and the Willamette Heritage Center (formerly the Mission Mill Museum). The Monmouth library has a free pass to the Hallie Ford Art Museum (on the Willamette University cam- pus) as well. Check with your local library to get more information and to reserve your opportunity to v i s i t t h e s e i n t e re s t i n g places, all located in Salem. You must be 18 years or older and have a library card, which is easily obtain- able at either library. PEDEE NEWS A RLENE K OVASH Columnist Chipgrass was enthusiastic, genuine and sincerely ap- preciated. It’s always great to get feet through the door of this old building (a late 19th century church) and to see smiling faces of com- munity members,” says KV Community Trust President David Crowe. “A goal of the Trust is to engage the larger community and offer places to gather and enjoy each other’s company. The food was good, the music was great and the company jovial.” Crowe also noted that he looks forward to du- plicating this sort of activity soon and hopes to get the word out to the Pedee and Kings Valley communities to come join the fun. Kings Crossing is run by the high school students at Kings Valley Charter School and will be open each Sat- urday until school is out. — Billy and Heather Traglia and their four kids took a break last week, going to Depot Bay for an overnight stay. It was a fun and relax- ing time for parents and the kids, Jenae, Wyatt, Lilah, and Kailey, loved it. Let us list your upcoming event taking place in Polk County. To submit an event for calendar consideration, please send it at least two weeks before the actual event date to the Itemizer-Observer via email (ionews@polkio.com). Solution on Page 6A — Former neighbor Jen- nifer Vandenberg spent the weekend of Feb. 25 and 26 visiting Judy Guida. Their fun event was to clean out and declutter Judy’s “media room,” which they accomplished. Jen- nifer is an organizer extra- ordinaire and could earn a living wage doing it, she’s that good. — Civil War re-enactors Da v i d a n d A m y Pl e t t , dressed in period clothing, went to Forest Grove last week and had a great time sharing about the Civil War with fifty middle-schoolers. The kids were intrigued with all they talked about. www.polkio.com On Saturday afternoon, Feb. 25, Alex Russell played his mandolin in his first public performance with Pedee’s newly formed folk and bluegrass band, Chip- grass, which played at the Kings Crossing Saturday Market in the old Kings Valley church during a chili-cook off fundraiser benefiting a future Youth Activity Center, lovingly dubbed the KVYAC. Among the great chilis in the run- ning, KV teacher Will An- drews made the spiciest. It appeared the brave souls who tried the spicy mix loved it as Mr. Andrews’ chili won the contest by a bean. “The music shared by Pencil us in! www.polkio.com VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES These Polk County groups would welcome individuals who have time or expertise to volunteer.
