Polk County News Polk County Itemizer-Observer • February 15, 2017 9A Eclipse: August brings rare event JOLENE GUZMAN/Itemizer-Observer The Motor Vu Drive-in’s 63-year run ended in 2016. Drive-in: Mexico to focus on Fox cinema Continued from Page 1A “I don’t think it would have worked out anyway,” he said. Mexico is selling off equipment at the drive-in and should be off the site at the end of February. Still the owner of the Fox Theatre in Dallas and Star Theatre in Stayton, Mexico will turn his attention to his other businesses. “I will concentrate on the Fox in the summer, since I won’t be here all summer,” Mexico said. “The Star is doing well, but the Fox needs some more people coming through the doors.” He said he has plans in the works for the Fox that will be announced later. Mexico hasn’t given up on the idea of a drive-in, either, just not in Dallas. He’s looking at properties elsewhere in the valley. “I’m hoping I will find more affordable land,” Mexico said. Comments on Friday’s Facebook announcement illus- trated that Motor Vu fans will feel the absence of the drive- in just as much as Mexico. People posted photos and sto- ries of their trips to the drive-in over the years. “Thank you for providing a great place for our family to make some wonderful memories,” wrote Wendee Schmitke, one of many who commented to express similar sentiments. “Your drive-in will be sorely missed.” Continued from Page 1A Coffelt teamed up with Elaine Cuyler, self-pro- claimed “chief eclipse offi- cer,” who is educating about and promoting the next eclipse that will be seen in Oregon on Aug. 21. They published Coffelt’s third children’s science book, “The Big Eclipse.” Those who witnessed the 1979 eclipse say the Polk County region is in for a rare treat in August, and people should go out of their way to see it. They recommend people research proper eye protec- tion and watch videos of eclipses so they know what to expect. Also, research what will happen on Aug. 21 and where they sun will be in the sky — totality is about 10:15 a.m., so not high in the sky — to make sure where you plan to be offers a good view. Coffelt is looking forward to seeing the August eclipse from a hilltop in her hometown of NASA SCIENTIFIC VISUALIZATION LAB/for the Itemizer-Observer The Great American Eclipse will cast its shadow over Oregon on Aug. 21. Baker City, which is on the path of totality. The stronger possibility of clear skies in eastern Oregon has her eager to see what she missed during the 1979 eclipse. “I look forward to seeing the sun disappear and the di- amond ring effect just before totality,” she said. “This is a rare and marvelous event.” Kasnick says Oregonians should feel fortunate that solar eclipses 37 years apart have tracked over Oregon. It’s tempting to want to capture the moment for eternity through video or a photo, but nothing is like seeing it with your own eyes, he added. “Just enjoy it. Don’t get distracted,” Kasnick said. “There’s going to be a mil- lion pictures of it.” In one final bit of prepa- ration: Kasnick said people should ask a higher power for a favor. “Whatever god you be- lieve in, pray for clear skies,” he said. Fair: Bond would help with repairs Continued from Page 1A Of that total, $1.5 million would be dedicated to main- tenance of fair buildings and grounds. Most of the repairs are designated for the main building, including replac- ing the cracked concrete floor, the leaking roof, non- ADA compliant restroom, replacing siding and other minor repairs. About $400,000 would be applied to repairing walk- ways and expanding the as- phalt area at the fairgrounds. The bond would replace the county’s $20 million road bond that expired in November. “All of these buildings, all of these assets and facilities that we have for everyone to use across the county, are the same as the roads and bridges,” said Com- m i s s i o n e r Cra i g Po p e. “They are all assets that the public expects and needs us to maintain. Clearly, there are issues on this property that we all feel must have attention.” The hearings are Wednes- day, today, at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the conference room at the Polk County Court- house, 850 Main St., Dallas. Citizens are welcome to provide comment and learn about the proposed bond. For more information: 503-623-8173.
