MI TOWN
Punxsutawney Phil was
comfortably sleeping in his
warm den Thursday
(Groundhog Day), when he
was taken out and thrust
into the freezing Pennsylva-
nia morning. Phil took one
look at all the cameras and
heavily-coated watchers,
saw his shadow, and rushed
right back to quiet and
comfort on a cold and win-
try day. To true groundhog
believers, Phil’s action
means that we all can look
forward to six more weeks
of winter. It’s interesting to
me that people who com-
pletely deny all the scien-
tists’ research and knowl-
edge regarding climate
change can believe the ac-
tions of a celebrity rodent
on a frosty February morn-
ing.

the doom and gloom on a
cold wintry evening is to
celebrate Dr. Richard Davis’
contributions to MI Town
over many years. Central
High School will present the
2017 First Artist Award to
Dr. Davis at a reception on
Saturday. A concert will fol-
low at 7:00 pm, with admis-
sion proceeds and dona-
tions benefitting the Robert
Page Performing Arts Schol-
arship Fund. Ticket prices
are $10 for adults, $5 for
students. Please contact
chsperformingarts.org for
more information. Tickets
may be purchased at the
door or on line. During his
tenure at WOU, Dr. Richard
Davis produced over 80
plays and is well known for
his imaginative and very
creative costume design in
nearly 250 productions.

For those of us of a cer-
tain age — do you remem-
ber all the fun and good
times back in the ’50s —
with drive-in movies and
going steady and football
games and cool cars?
WO U S P S A ( Ps yc h o l o g y
Club) is sponsoring a good
oldfashioned sock hop at
Monmouth Senior Center
on Feb. 17, from noon until
2 p.m. Hamburgers, hot
dogs, chips and root beer
floats headline the menu —
it’s all free — and will take
us back to the days when
we went to Yaws, Lawsons,
the Uptown Drive-In or
wherever your favorite teen
hangout used to be. Music
from the ’40s to ’60s will be
featured, so get out your old
letter jacket, find some
bobby-sox and join the fun.

It’s been over a month
now since those New Year’s
resolutions were made, and
how ’s the decluttering
going? Sometimes what’s
needed a bit of group men-
tality and a push in the
right direction to get things
moving. Fortunately, Terri
Gregory will be teaching
classes at the Monmouth
Public Library, beginning
Feb. 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. The
first class is titled: What do I
Keep? All classes will be in
the library meeting room
and are free. Please contact
the library at 503-838-1932
for more information.

PEDEE NEWS
Pedee firefighters Nic
Heller and Ethan McKin-
ney were sworn in for the
Pedee Fire Station 70 at a
promotion and swearing in
ceremony for the Polk Fire
District No. 1 on Feb. 1 at
Central High School. The
ceremony was attended by
former and retired district
fire chiefs, local and state
officials, and officers and
firefighters from neighbor-
ing districts, along with
family, friends, and fellow
firefighters. Dave and Dell
Weston presented the col-
ors at the ceremony, and
Fire Chief Ben Stange pow-
erfully shared how, “What
you do matters.” Nic’s wife
Cassandra pinned his
badge on him, and Ethan’s

County Commissioner
Craig Pope, Independence
Mayor John McArdle, Mon-

cials there to recognize the
14 volunteer and paid fire-
fighters who were sworn in
or promoted from across
the district.

Several Pedee Women’s
Club members are taking a
“Melt and Blend” work-
shop using crayons on fab-
ric, taught by Terrie Kyger,
at the clubhouse. Shirley
McBeth, Marguerite Nice
and her neighbor, 91-year-
old Mar y Lets, Pam
Burkhalter, Ethelene Os-
good, Nancy Russell, Bar-
bara Marx, and Laurel
Bosvert are all painting
beautiful poinsettias and
quail on fabric that they
will adhere to quilted
items. The club is also plan-
ning the next raffle quilt to
benefit the soldier fund.
—
I will be having another
free class for beginning
quilters and up, March 1
and 8 from 10 a.m. to noon
at the clubhouse. It’s open
to anyone, so contact me at
kovasha@gmail.com to
sign up. We will be making
a log cabin quilt — one of
the easiest patterns to do
that is a real favorite. All I
ask is that you know how to
use your sewing machine.
—
The members at the
Women’s Club appreciate
getting eggs from Darrel
and Shirley McBeth on
Wednesdays, but during
those snowy days, a bobcat
came down from the hills
and dined on seven of their
chickens, cutting produc-
tion way down. They im-
proved their cage so he
can’t get in now. Hopefully.
