Doors: Hawkins
to investigate
crash bars
Continued from Page 1A
Commissioner Jennifer
Wheeler said she didn’t
like the design that only
opens the doors when the
fire alarm is pulled. That
won’t account for an ac-
tive shooter or another
kind of emergency where
people will need to exit
quickly.
Hawkins said there’s a
possible solution to that,
but it would require replac-
ing the doors to install a
system already in place in
the addition. Only the sher-
iff’s office door and main
entrance are open to the
public on that side.
Those that are closed to
the public have “crash bars”
installed, which people can
use to escape in an emer-
gency.
“We could look at chang-
ing the doors. You still
could try to make them
look as historic as possible.
The building’s not on the
national registry, but we
could still do what we can,”
Hawkins said. “We are not
going to put signs up saying
‘pull the fire alarm in case
of an active shooter.’”
Board Chairman Craig
Pope asked Hawkins to in-
vestigate that as a possible
solution and present what
he finds to the board. He
said crash bars are neces-
sary, and he didn’t feel
comfortable with “having a
dead end for people that
appears to be an escape
route.”
“When you have a wide-
open building that anybody
can walk through, I get it. I
see the concerns court has,
the folks that work there,”
Pope said. “There’s a way
we can do this, get where
we need to go. We are not
quite there yet.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Continued from Page 4A
The Dallas Wrestling
team without hesitation
responded enthusiastically
to this alert.
On the day of the move,
this large group of young
men arrived promptly at
the pre-arranged meeting
site.
From the very begin-
ning the team was nothing
short of respectful, kind
and attentive.
They took great care
with the woman’s personal
belongings and even
worked with her to ad-
dress concerns when
transporting more delicate
items.
What was so unique
about this group was their
willingness to share their
personalities; which was a
highlight for the commu-
nity member.
Not only were the boys
respectful, but it was
abundantly clear that they
were also just being them-
selves.
They were eager to help
someone in need, while
at the same time not
afraid to display their
sense of humor, as well as
charm.
A huge thank you is
owed to this team.
Thank you for your gen-
erosity, spirit and sheer
numbers.
Lastly, they need to be
commended on their will-
ingness to participate,
since this all took place on
a day off from school;
which speaks volumes to
their character and sense
of community.
Good luck Dallas Wrest-
ing team with the remain-
der of your season.

The commissioners would like to see a similar system
on the old courthouse doors as is in the newer part of
the building.
