OBITUARIES
Kenneth M. Walker
March 30, 1921 – Sept. 7, 2016
Kenneth Walker, 95, was
born March 30, 1921, in
Blaine, a tiny town in Tillam-
ook County. He grew up in
Pleasant Valley, graduating
from Tillamook High School.
From his father, Alex Walker,
he developed a keen interest
in natural history. In 1941, he
and Charlotte Mae Doty
married, spending the next
72 years together. His further
studies at
Oregon
State Col-
lege were
interrupt-
ed
by
World War
II, when in
his junior
year he
was called
up, enlist-
ing in the
Army as a
second
lieutenant
after studying ROTC at Ore-
gon State University. During
the war, he was sent to
France, Germany and
Czechoslovakia, coming
home in 1946, but remaining
in the reserves for six more
years. Back to graduate
school, Kenneth completed a
Master of Science degree in
1949, and then a Ph.D. in
1955, both in biology from
OSU.
In 1951, the family moved
to Tacoma, Wash., where he
accepted a teaching position
at the College of Puget
Sound, now called University
of Puget Sound. His favorite
course was marine biology,
which led to a big project:
Building a family friendly
cruising boat, Proteus I, from
a 28-foot double-ended Bris-
tol Bay fishing hull to explore
Puget Sound and parts
north.
In 1957, the family moved
to Monmouth, where Ken-
neth took an assistant pro-
fessor position at Oregon
College of Education, now
known as Western Oregon
University, teaching until his
retirement in 1986 as a full
professor. His favorite class
this time was natural history
of Oregon; he would take his
students on three spring field
trips to experience firsthand
the varied ecology of Oregon.
Known as “Doc Walker,”
many meaningful relation-
ships were forged during his
years of teaching.
Retirement allowed Ken
and Charlotte to enjoy fully
the boating trips to Desola-
tion Sound in the summer,
and fifth-wheel excursions to
Arizona in the winter. He en-
joyed a full life.
Kenneth is survived by his
daughters, Charline Dur-
chanek and Virginia Hernan-
dez; brother Bayard Walker;
eight grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his
wife, Charlotte; two sons,
Roger and Ronald Walker; his
parents and one grandson.
In lieu of flowers, we rec-
ommend donations to the
Kenneth Walker Research
Award set up by a former stu-
dent. This is a grant-type
award to fund undergradu-
ate research in the biological
sciences at Western Oregon
University. Use this link for

Because the memorial for
Kenneth’s wife was canceled
due to snow two years ago,
we are having a combined
memorial for both Kenneth
and Charlotte Walker on Sat-
urday, Dec. 3, 2016, at the
Monmouth Senior Center
from 2 to 4 p.m. The Mon-
mouth Senior Center is lo-
cated at 180 Warren St. S.,
Monmouth, on the corner of
Clay and Warren streets. Any
of their friends and associ-
ates are welcome to attend.
Please bring your photos
and memories to share.
