Polk County Living Polk County Itemizer-Observer • September 28, 2016 9A ENGAGEMENTS MI TOWN Wolfe-Osborne We’re celebrating the re- turn of many new and re- turning students to Western Oregon University, as classes began this week. As we say farewell to summer and those lazy, long evenings, we’re all a bit more energized to see and meet our new neighbors as they learn to navigate around their school- year community and settle in to university living for the next several months. — What could be more fun that a football game on an autumn afternoon? Our WOU Wolves meet Azusa Pa- c i f i c t h i s Sa t u rd a y, a t McArthur Stadium on cam- pus. Round up the kids and pack up a blanket or two, and everyone can have a great time without a big hit to the wallet or a long drive. P ATTY T AYLOR D UTCHER Columnist Pianist Gayle Hennicke will be performing works from J.S. Bach at Faith Lutheran Church (200 Mon- mouth-Independence High- way) on Sunday. Ms. Hen- nicke has spent many years in Germany teaching and performing professionally, after receiving degrees in Music in the U.S. There is no cost for the concert, and peo- ple will have the opportunity to meet with her at a recep- tion following the concert. Any donations will benefit refugees in Europe. As we make the transition from summer to autumn, we’re spending less time out- doors and getting ready for the longer and darker evenings to come. After a busy afternoon raking leaves, preparing dinner and other household chores, it’s nice to curl up in a comfy chair by the fireside with a good book and a cup of tea. A sweet dog (or two) or a warm cat on your lap is optional, but very welcome in our house. — Those of us who have fol- lowed Kelly Williams Brown to becoming a published au- thor, were pleased to read “Adulting” (a perfect high school or college graduation gift to daughters or grand- daughters) a few years ago. Brown’s new book is Gra- cious, which I’m looking for- ward to reading very soon. Jules Cooper, who lives with husband Rick Cooper in Kings Valley has just pub- lished her first novel, “Marcea of the Dust: The Lost Girls”, and it’s now available at Ama- zon and other retailers. My dear friend of many years, Moma Escriva, has recently published her first book, “One Lie Too Many.” What fun it’s been to go with Moma on this extraordinary journey from writing class to seeing her finished work. — Let’s all take the time to get to our destinations these days and be extra careful when driving as there are more walkers and bike riders on our local streets and high- ways. Please be watchful and take care when venturing out into the world. Alex Wolfe and Lisa Osborne, both of An- chorage, Alaska, an- nounced their engage- ment. Alex is the son of Ken and Laura Wolfe, of Canby, formerly of Dal- las. He is a 2010 gradu- ate of Dallas High School. He is a staff ser- geant for the U.S. Air Force, stationed in An- chorage. He earned his associate degree, and is working on a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Lisa is the daughter of Janet Hayes, of Oregon City, and Gene Osborne, of Astoria. She is a 2009 graduate of Canby High School. She earned her degree in marketing from Portland State University in 2013. The wedding will be March 25, 2017, at Postlewait Country Weddings, in Canby. BIRTHS PEDEE NEWS On Sept. 16, good friend Ardene Barnhart joined her friend Jesus in heaven at the age of 89. She lived in Hoskins but attended Pedee Church for the past several years and was an inspiration to us all, with her strong faith, pithy reminders and advice, and love for us all. Her service was at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dallas last Thursday. We will miss her. — June Clark spent five days, from Sept. 14-19 on the road on her motorcycle, traveling 1723 miles to get nine Rose City Motorcycle Club Grand Tour checkpoints and six ABCity checkpoints. She says to have fun. A RLENE K OVASH Columnist she had occasional rain the last two days and watched a rainbow over North Powder for several miles. She trav- eled to California, re-enter- ing Oregon once from Hwy 199 and once from 1-5, then traveled to Idaho where she came back on I-84, then on the 19th came down from Washington on Hwy 101. Shows you what we 74-year- olds can do, when we want — Ted and Ethelene Osgood joined their family at the Dallas Bar and Grill to cele- brate grandson Cole Cochrane’s 26th birthday on Sept. 20. His parents, Mick and Debbie Cochrane, and lots of other family were there as well. Cole lives and works in Salem. — Dorothy McBeth’s family brought dinner to her house that Tuesday, to celebrate her 95th birthday. Most of her kids were there: Sandy and Gary Quiring and their daughter Kimber of Dallas, and Darrel and Shirley and son Bob, and Sam and Terri, Evans plus Connie Ames and her daughter Renee Pierce. The Pedee Women’s Club also celebrated her birthday the next day with cake and ice cream and a special card from the club. Juandeane Skidmore was there, after being out for a few weeks with a broken bone in her foot. Alberta Jones also came for the party. — The Pedee Women’s Club has new officers. Laurel Bosvert is president, Shirley McBeth is secretary, and Laverne Bennett is treasurer. The club has had a number of new members this past two years, which is very en- couraging.
