Polk County News 2A Polk County Itemizer-Observer • August 10, 2016 CSD named transformation district By Emily Mentzer The Itemizer-Observer INDEPENDENCE — Cen- tral School District has been named a transformation dis- trict along with 14 others in the state, said Dorie Vickery, director of curriculum and instruction. “The Oregon Department of Education is still working out what this means,” she said at Monday’s school board meeting. “They are building this on the fly. It’s an improvement-type model. The status is for four years. There’s some funding that comes with it, and there will be expected outcomes.” The designation is for schools who are not meeting ODE’s expectations for Eng- lish Language Learners. “There were a bunch of data points,” Vickery said. “Central has not made an- nual achievable objectives in forever, and neither have a bunch of other schools.” Learning a second lan- guage in the classroom comes with a significant number of variables, she said. “The positive note on this is we have already made sig- nificant gains,” Vickery said. “We started our improve- ment plan.” The district has imple- mented the “Be Glad Train- ing,” a professional develop- ment model in the area of language learning and litera- cy developed by the U.S. De- partment of Education. Vickery said part of the Be Glad Training is taking sci- ence and social studies stan- dards and integrating them with language arts standards. Also, Vickery said she is working with middle school and high school staff and has changed the exiting process. County VSO program progresses Itemizer-Observer staff report DALLAS — The Polk County Board of Commissioners approved an application with the state on Aug. 2 for half- year funding for the new Veterans’ Service Officer program that will begin in January. The state is slated to send the county $31,000 to help pay for the program. Polk County included $40,000 in its 2016-17 budget to launch the service. Previously, veterans seeking services had to go Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs in Salem. County Administrator Greg Hansen said the county has found a possible location for an office, the former Claire’s Mercantile on Washington Street in Dallas. “It would require some minor renovations,” Hansen said. “It gives them their own site. It has a lot of positives to it.” Student registration begins at Polk County schools Itemizer-Observer staff report POLK COUNTY — Schools in Polk County will begin registering new and returning students this week and next.
