COMMUNITY CALENDAR
MI TOWN
Summertime days and
evenings give all of us in MI
Town so many opportunities
to get out and about — for
neighborhood walks, with
visits with neighbors and
friends along the way, stop-
ping by one of our restau-
rants, bakeries or coffee
shops for a quick cup to give
us energy as we go about
our regular routines, or for a
more leisurely lunch or din-
ner to celebrate a special oc-
casion or friendship.
—
These days, most of us are
busy with all things gar-
den — going to the comput-
er to check for yet another
zucchini and/or squash
recipe to keep up with the
veggies showing up on a
daily basis, picking green
beans and other goodies to
freeze for winter, and seek-
ing out the blackberries and
raspberries that are so in-

credibly good this summer. I
spied the first almost-red
tomato in the garden last
Thursday, and hopefully by
press time, there will have
been more for salads and
sandwiches and just for eat-
ing right out of the garden.
—
For the past two sum-
mers, I’ve been able to grow
so many good and tasty
vegetables, thanks to the
Seed Lending Library at the
Monmouth Public Library.
This is my first year to try
black beans and if the sub-
stantial yield from the peas,
green beans and lettuce is
any indication, this should
give us a bumper crop. If
your garden planting is
complete for this summer,
be sure to check with the li-
brary next springtime to see
if this wonderful program
will repeat. The seed pack-
ets are free, and if you can
share goodies from your
garden with someone else,
that’s an added bonus for
everyone.
—
Rock out with the group
Charlie Horse this evening
in Main Street Park in Mon-
mouth. The fun begins at
6:30 p.m. Bring your picnic
basket and enjoy another
opportunity to get together
with friends and neighbors,
with no admission charge.
—
“The Avengers — Age of
Ultron” is the featured out-
door movie on Thursday at
the Independence Am-
phitheater. Bring the family,
pack up a supper and enjoy
a summer evening under
the stars, free to everyone.
—
Celebrate Friday at anoth-
er outdoor concert — this
one on Friday evening at the
Independence Amphithe-
a t e r. Se a t t l e - b a s e d
Longstride will bring their
reggae sound and enthusi-
asm to an evening of what
promises to be great enter-
tainment. There is a suggest-
ed donation of $5 to attend.
—
Let’s all be mindful of all
the children and bicycle rid-
ers and dog walkers who are
out enjoying the summer-
time days and evenings as
we drive from one place to
another. It only takes an in-
stant for a serious accident
to occur, and we want every-
one to arrive safely at their
destinations.

PEDEE NEWS
Pedee Church’s pastor,
Daniel Russell, was ordained
along with four other minis-
ters at the Pacific Conference
of the Evangelical Church
annual meeting on July 20 at
Valley View Evangelical
Church, near Portland. His
wife, Heidi, joined him for
the ceremony as they were
prayed for and commis-
sioned by denominational
and local church leaders.
Previous Pedee Pastor Mitch
Lee, Pam Burbank, and Tim
Barnhart also participated in
the ordination. Daniel’s par-
ents, Jerry and Phyllis Rus-
sell, and Heidi’s parents, Jon
and Linda Hovet, attended
with other friends, Eric
Schwanke, Scott Castle, and
Matt and Nicole Roby.
Daniel had been licensed as
a pastor and, as such, had to
be reaffirmed annually by a
vote of the “elders” — the or-

dained ministers. Now he is
one of those elders.
—
Dave and Suzanne Bur-
bank’s son, Brennan, took
his PE (professional engi-
neering) test a few weeks
ago and passed (on his first
try, with a lot of hard study),
so this last week he received
formal notification that he is
now a licensed engineer. He
works for the Oregon De-
partment of Transportation.
He, his wife, Callie, and two
kids live in Independence.

On July 19, I took Polish
friends, Jacek Szalkowski
and Mia Lewanczyk, to see
beautiful Multnomah Falls,
and Jacek proposed to Mia
on the bridge there! Of
course the place was packed
with tourists, which didn’t
stop Jacek, so as he present-
ed her with a diamond ring,
the crowd cheered and
clapped and wished them
well. They’ve seen a lot of
Oregon at this point, but I
suspect Multnomah Falls
will be first in their hearts.
—
Last Friday, Judy Guida
and Jennifer Vandenberg
participated in Disney’s
“Virtual 5K Run,” which
means they sign up to run a
5K where they wish and
then receive a medal for
doing so. They ran theirs on
Pedee Creek Road. Virtual
5K runs are on the honor
system, but I can’t imagine
the point of signing up and
then cheating.
—
Joe and Jackie Guida visit-
ed Judy Guida for several
days this month. The neigh-
bors taught Joe and Judy to
drive their tractor, so they
got a lot of work done
around the barn and pas-
tures. While he was here,
they went to Portland to see
the Cavalia Horse Show in
Portland, a magical experi-
ence for them all.

A big thank you to Allison

that contributed to loving a
giggly, bouncy, group of lit-

School last week. Themed
“Deep Sea Discovery — God
Is With Me Wherever I Go,”
VBS was fun from start to
finish.
